Introducing The Practice of Alternate Nostril Breathing: For A Balanced Nervous System
/ A Thread /
The left nostril is connected and sensed more by the right brain hemisphere and left side of the body.
While the right nostril is connected and sensed more by the left brain hemisphere and right side of the body.
Our alertness and ‘ready-for-action are provided by the right nostril and left brain (sympathetic).
Our calmness, synthesis of information, and sensitivity are provided by the left nostril and right brain (parasympathetic).
What happens? We breathe predominantly through one nostril or the other, at any given time. Because of our normal human asymmetry and overall lack of alternate movements, many of us develop facial asymmetry that forces us to breathe through one side of the nostril more.
A study examined the nervous system effects of nostril breathing. The results?
•R nostril: 37% increase in baseline oxygen consumption.
•L nostril: 24% increase in baseline oxygen consumption.
•The alternate nostril group showed an 18% increase,
The results suggest that breathing selectively through either nostril could have a marked activating effect or a relaxing effect on the sympathetic nervous system.
1. Close the R nostril and gently, slowly, and fully inhale through the L nostril. 2. Pause 4 to 5 seconds. 3. Close the L nostril and exhale gently, slowly, and fully through the R nostril.
4. Pause 4-5 seconds. 5. Inhale through the R nose. 6. Close the R nostril and exhale through the L nostril. *This completes one cycle.
Begin the second cycle by gently, slowly, and fully inhaling through the left nostril and repeating the above. Attempt to complete 6 cycles.

A GUIDE TO HOT SAUNA COLD PLUNGES - CONTRAST THERAPY
// A Thread //
Contrast therapy? This refers to the combo of exposure to heat and cold to elicit physiological responses.
The use of contrast therapy can be found globally: traditional onsens in Japan, plunge pools/sauna in Nordic cultures, to sweat lodges of Native American tribes.
Regardless of methodology, the ‘stressful’ exposure to freezing cold and scorching hot temperatures has been proven to dramatically improve a number of health and wellness factors.
Many are familiar with the “hot sauna cold plunge” which we will focus on today.
