So lets start.
While you study Mech Engg, please check and take if there is any special modules as Pressure vessels, Heat Exchangers, Pumps, Compressors, Gas Turbines (2/n)
If you have done Mech Engg degree, you may do Masters in you have interest in fields like Offshore Technology, Engineering Design, Energy Engineering, Industrial Engineering. Masters will enhance your technical capability & will have better chance among others. (3/n)
If you need to go to work immediately, you may try in the Engineering / design firms. I see that after done with Mech, people go to Automobile where you need to compete with Automobile degree holders. But Engineering firms in Oil & Gas sector will provide higher salary (4/n)
and the experience will be much appreciated after few years. We call the design companies as EPC companies. EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement and Construction. Certain companies only do Engineering only, and Procurement / Construction maybe done by others. (5/n)
This sector includes FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) producing oil and gas, Offshore/Onshore plants, Refinery, Petrochemical plants. You can focus on Engineering side as starting point. (6/n)
There are few options for Mechanical engineer to choose from;
Static: Pressure vessels, Heat Exchangers, Filters, Storage Tanks
Rotating: Pumps, Blowers, Compressors, Gas Turbines (for power generation and drivers) (7/n)
Softwares you need to learn; If you already have hands-on experience, it will be an added advantage.
-PVElite, Compress (For Pressure vessels)
-HTRI Exchanger Suite (For Heat exchangers)
-AutoCAD (For drawings)
-Office applications (8/n)
There is no specific software required for Rotating equipments. You may learn along the way when you join a company. You need to know which are the API & ASME standards applicable to your job for both Rotating and Static. (9/n)
Below are some of the Companies to explore (includes Manufacturer firms, Engineering/Design (EPC) firms, Refinery/Petrochemical plants (These are manufacturing plants where you get experience in the field): (10/n)
After you start working as Static or Rotating Engineer, you will have chances to become Lead Engineer or Engineering manager based on the number of years’ experience gained and of course your contribution with some Project Management skills. (11/n)
The below video explains how a Centrifugal Compressor works (sample only):

The below video explains how a Gas Turbine works (sample only):

You may find more such videos online for learning (12/n)
If people show interest, I can also write about other disciplines such as Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Piping for knowledge sharing and opportunities in Oil & Gas sector. (13/n)
Disclaimer: I have shared the above contents for knowledge sharing purposes only, not for promoting any individual or any company. You may do your own research and choose your path based on your findings. (14/n)
