10 days ago TPLF critic @AbdiwahabSheik7 was abducted in downtown Nairobi, Kenya in front of a crowd of onlookers. These were his last two tweets. The day before.

1.
He has now been released. Which is good. Very Good.
In the intervening period. There was a suicide bombing in MOG. PM Roble, pictured talking to Boris Johnson in the first tweet, had his powers removed. There was also an armed standoff at the intelligence HQ, and an attempted abduction of Somalia’s spy chief.
On Friday the USG announced an executive order with broad powers to enable it to enact sanctions against anyone preventing a ceasefire in the Ethiopia/Tigray conflict.
Tonight the Head of Uganda’s armed forces has delivered a public show of support for Egyptian dictator Al-Sisi by way of several tweets.

The timing seems odd to say the least. Generals generally don’t deliver diplomatic messages.
But that’s not a rule. The commander of Centcom recently also visited Egypt at a very sensitive time and delivered a message of support to Egypt, in a manner that was clearly intended to send a message to Ethiopia.
With the working week about to commence and the UNGA underway in New York it the United States is ratcheting up pressure on Ethiopia to enter into “negotiations without preconditions” with the TPLF. A demand that it knows will not be complied with.
This has already happened twice in the last two months, first with @PowerUSAID and later with @JoeBiden envoy Jeffrey Feltman. Neither even met with Ethiopian PM @AbiyAhmedAli. Something which western analysts seem to think rude, but which meets diplomatic protocol.
And there is a reason.

TPLF forces invaded the Amhara and Afar regions of Ethiopia, during the Solemn Olympic Truce and have been there ever since killing civilians and creating millions more IDPs.
The invasion of Afar which included an attack on IDPs at medical center which killed 240 blocked the corridor for aid to be delivered, but the US and EU blamed the Govt of Ethiopia.
Eventually aid deliveries resumed but after a couple of weeks the WFP ran out of trucks because 428 of them did not return from Tigray.

Meanwhile TPLF forces looted @USAID and @UNICEF warehouses and continued their killing and raping across large swathes of Amhara.
And through all of this, much of which occurred under a unilateral Govt.ceasefire, the USG continued to berate the Ethiopian Govt and demand it enter into talks. Even as the TPLF refused to do so.
There is much much more including new fresh massacres by the TPLF and the looting and destruction of a 1.5bn USD rail project and the theft of 100s of tonnes of explosives.

All by a rebel secessionist movement which previously ran Ethiopia for decades as a close US ally.
It seemed sensible to take @POTUS @JoeBiden and his @VP at their word on Friday when they announced their package of measures intended to bring peace.

But four days on the clock is ticking, the killing is continuing and the USG hasn’t done anything concrete, in word or deed.
Ethiopia is not going to capitulate to this pressure and has said so very clearly. And tonight’s Uganda move suggests the African Bureau is only just getting started.

As the #UNGA headlining global leaders debate is about to begin, @POTUS/@JoeBiden speaking shortly, smart observers have their eyes on #UNGAEthiopiaCrisis - an issue which is threatening to divide the rich North West from the poor global south, especially Africa.
Yesterday I posted a thread on @USAmbUN's #UNGA briefing to media on U.S. Priorities for #UNGA76.

The questions raised in the CNN piece are general, but the specific issues around a novel new unilateral sanctions regime announced by @JoeBiden on Friday are very specific.
The Ethiopian PM @AbiyAhmedAli's response to @JoeBiden has resonated throughout Africa - published in full by numerous African news outlets - but largely ignored in Western media. There were no media questions on Ethiopia in @USAmbUN's presser Friday.

The UK's Foreign Office, here @KFosterFCDO, is continuing to take the diplomatic lead on the IC side to address the constitutional ructions in Somalia. The @SomaliPM @MohamedHRoble (2nd pic) has had his wings clipped - i.e. powers removed - by Somalia President @M_Farmaajo.
The Somalia Crisis was discussed in the UNSC on Friday, and here is a standup with the UNSC Representative on the Council before the meeting. She did not return to brief the media afterwards.
Somalia's recent constitutional crisis is directly connected to the war against rebel TPLF fighters in Ethiopia as it was triggered by the death of Ikran Tahlil whom some allege was a spy working for foreign interests, and others claim was a whistleblower.

On the day the USG [@POTUS/@JoeBiden and @VP/@KamalaHarris] announced a sanctions regime for Ethiopia @USAmbUN/@LindaT_G addressed UN media on priorities for the #UNGA session which begins today.
- Covid
- Climate
- HR and Democracy

Thread...
This thread focuses on the third priority which encompasses Human Rights, support for democracy, a rules based global order and fighting autocracy.

Direct link to @LindaT_G's #UNGA opening remarks to media that relates to this.
@LindaT_G "Democracy, human rights and the international rules based order are under attack," Linda told the media.

And she is right. They are, and in the case of what is happening in Ethiopia, these very precious goals for humanity are under attack from the United States Govt.

The UN General Assembly is going to be where the impasse between the United States and Ethiopia will play out this week, in the speeches of member nations, and in the corridors and side meetings, formal and informal, which are where the planet's leaders meet and talk.
2 issues top of the UN's "Common Agenda" for the planet - issues the 0UNSG spoke very frankly about to @FareedZakaria, Covid Vaccinations & Climate Change. Both are exacerbating tensions between the Rich North West and the Global South.
The Continent of Africa is far and away the largest and most populous part of the world effected by this dynamic, and this tension - which is again very relevant to what Ethiopia is currently experiencing - is about to play out in the diplomatic spotlight.

Sunday's @FareedZakaria show's context is the UN General Assembly. It addresses global level politics, and in particular the failures of US @POTUS @JoeBiden to reset "America First" Trumpian era policy approaches.

It is all relevant to Ethiopia.
edition.cnn.com/shows/fareed-z…
The show always begins with an editorial which frames what follows. It addresses US's unwise use of unilateral sanctions, alienation of France and @JoeBiden's failure to escape Trumpian policy.
A frank discussion about another long term U.S. ally, France, which like Ethiopia has also been badly alienated by recent U.S. diplomatic foolishness follows.
