On the day the USG [@POTUS/@JoeBiden and @VP/@KamalaHarris] announced a sanctions regime for Ethiopia @USAmbUN/@LindaT_G addressed UN media on priorities for the #UNGA session which begins today.
- Covid
- Climate
- HR and Democracy

Thread...
This thread focuses on the third priority which encompasses Human Rights, support for democracy, a rules based global order and fighting autocracy.

Direct link to @LindaT_G's #UNGA opening remarks to media that relates to this.
@LindaT_G "Democracy, human rights and the international rules based order are under attack," Linda told the media.

And she is right. They are, and in the case of what is happening in Ethiopia, these very precious goals for humanity are under attack from the United States Govt.
"Large wealthy autocracies have developed corrosive and coercive relationships with smaller, poor counties. The UNSC must weigh in on terrible atrocities wherever they occur. There is no tension between sovereign rights and human rights." - @USAmbUN #UNGA ImageImage
From an Ethiopian perspective, there is obviously a lot to unpack there.

"We believe our priorities are not just American priorities, they are global priorities and next week must be a moment to strengthen alliances and partnerships," she continued. Image
Nobel words, but what do they mean in the context of Ethiopia?

Evidently, in the U.S. Government's rubric, relationships between democratic nations that are "corrosive and coercive" to "smaller poor countries", indeed even smaller poor allies are an exception to this rule.
The assertion: "there is no tension between sovereign rights and human rights," whilst also a noble goal, is clearly not true. The UN Charter explicitly protects sovereign rights, yet since 1991 superpowers have repeatedly used HR justifications to invade small countries.
A debate about these issues is clearly in order and perhaps this 76th #UNGA will be a place where that debate can take place. This issue definitely needs to be addressed and sorted out. What has been happening over the past three decades is not working. Image
.@USAmbUN then directly addressed the elephant in the room, 1st saying US's "diplomacy agenda (this) week includes conflicts & security threats "from Afghanistan to Syria to Yemen to Burma (Myanmar)"

& then finally addressed Ethiopia. DIRECT LINK:
.@LindaT_G then reads notes about the announcement [they appear to be fragments from this briefing >> whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…]. At the end before taking questions she appears to momentarily being overcome with emotions here >> Image

The world has gathered to hear @JoeBiden the new "Leader of the free world" speak at the #UNGA. And Ethiopia is watching to see what he says about #UNGAEthiopiaCrisis and Human Rights after he imposed sanctions Friday on a nation facing a lethal rebel insurgency from the TPLF.
@JoeBiden And the speech has begun.
His initial remarks address Covid and the shared mourning around the globe due to millions of deaths.

As the #UNGA headlining global leaders debate is about to begin, @POTUS/@JoeBiden speaking shortly, smart observers have their eyes on #UNGAEthiopiaCrisis - an issue which is threatening to divide the rich North West from the poor global south, especially Africa.
Yesterday I posted a thread on @USAmbUN's #UNGA briefing to media on U.S. Priorities for #UNGA76.

The questions raised in the CNN piece are general, but the specific issues around a novel new unilateral sanctions regime announced by @JoeBiden on Friday are very specific.
The Ethiopian PM @AbiyAhmedAli's response to @JoeBiden has resonated throughout Africa - published in full by numerous African news outlets - but largely ignored in Western media. There were no media questions on Ethiopia in @USAmbUN's presser Friday.

The UK's Foreign Office, here @KFosterFCDO, is continuing to take the diplomatic lead on the IC side to address the constitutional ructions in Somalia. The @SomaliPM @MohamedHRoble (2nd pic) has had his wings clipped - i.e. powers removed - by Somalia President @M_Farmaajo.
The Somalia Crisis was discussed in the UNSC on Friday, and here is a standup with the UNSC Representative on the Council before the meeting. She did not return to brief the media afterwards.
Somalia's recent constitutional crisis is directly connected to the war against rebel TPLF fighters in Ethiopia as it was triggered by the death of Ikran Tahlil whom some allege was a spy working for foreign interests, and others claim was a whistleblower.

The UN General Assembly is going to be where the impasse between the United States and Ethiopia will play out this week, in the speeches of member nations, and in the corridors and side meetings, formal and informal, which are where the planet's leaders meet and talk.
2 issues top of the UN's "Common Agenda" for the planet - issues the 0UNSG spoke very frankly about to @FareedZakaria, Covid Vaccinations & Climate Change. Both are exacerbating tensions between the Rich North West and the Global South.
The Continent of Africa is far and away the largest and most populous part of the world effected by this dynamic, and this tension - which is again very relevant to what Ethiopia is currently experiencing - is about to play out in the diplomatic spotlight.

Sunday's @FareedZakaria show's context is the UN General Assembly. It addresses global level politics, and in particular the failures of US @POTUS @JoeBiden to reset "America First" Trumpian era policy approaches.

It is all relevant to Ethiopia.
edition.cnn.com/shows/fareed-z…
The show always begins with an editorial which frames what follows. It addresses US's unwise use of unilateral sanctions, alienation of France and @JoeBiden's failure to escape Trumpian policy.
A frank discussion about another long term U.S. ally, France, which like Ethiopia has also been badly alienated by recent U.S. diplomatic foolishness follows.

10 days ago TPLF critic @AbdiwahabSheik7 was abducted in downtown Nairobi, Kenya in front of a crowd of onlookers. These were his last two tweets. The day before.

He has now been released. Which is good. Very Good.
