Why you should worry less about culture and more about climate...

🧵👇
Culture is about the long-term vision we have for our team

Culture is also the result of whoever and whatever has come before us

Culture is the compounding of 1000s of small interactions over time
The word "culture" has become so popularized that coaches often feel we can just talk about it, then we have what we need.

Example ⤵️
It's a good thing that culture, and the recognition that there is a human side to performance, has become popularized, but it can do more harm than good if we just talk about the culture we're going to create but neglect to bring it to life.
Talking about culture, casting a vision for our culture, and defining our culture are all important.

But...

We should focus more on the CLIMATE we're creating moment by moment!

Culture can't be changed overnight, but we CAN change the climate instantly.
It's the climate that we create, moment by moment, that has the potential to make the long-term vision we have for our culture come to life.

We should constantly be asking ourselves this question:

"What's the next best decision I can make?"
Approaching our coaching with that mindset and asking ourselves that question can keep use grounded in the present moments.

It's about being where our feet our.

The way we show up each day, in each interaction is what ultimately creates the climate that builds the culture.
Coaches that create great climates are present in the moment and committed to making small, daily choices that bring the long-term vision for the culture to life.
Even if we step into a job where the culture is bad, we can find small, daily wins that will compound on one another to change the culture over time.

"Talking about culture might get you a job, but the CLIMATE you create will help you keep the job" - @coachk424 & @Rastogi_Aseem

Too often coaches provide feedback that doesn't help our players improve

If you want your players to improve faster...

Get better at giving aligned feedback!

Here’s a THREAD about what aligned feedback is, why it can be hard, and 3 steps to get better at it ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️
What is Aligned Feedback?

Aligned feedback is giving athletes feedback on the thing you’ve told them to focus on.

Sounds simple, right?

Simple, yes.

Easy, no.

Often coaches really struggle to do it and they’re not even aware of it...
When you make a stoppage to deliver feedback, deliver one piece of information, quickly, then get them playing again.

Once they resume play, give feedback on the ONE thing you make a stoppage to address.

Most coaches say they want to develop leaders...

But very few actually develop leaders.

5 Steps to Develop Leaders

🧵 ⬇️
1️⃣ Model

Do you know your core values?

Can you explain how to operationalize (aka "live out") those values?

Do you actually live out those values as the coach?

If you don't model them, you won't be able to truly develop leaders.
And it starts with...

DWYSYWD

Do
What
You
Say
You
Will
Do

This is what modeling is all about.

Be a coach that does what they say they will do.

It builds trust and few things break trust faster than not doing what you have said you will do.

Every coach wants a mentally tough team...

But how do you actually develop that?

3️⃣ TIPS to develop your athletes mental performance & toughness (and yours too)

from Ep. 24 with @DrBuning

🧵 ⬇️
1️⃣ It starts with modeling

"I often wonder if coaches just forget some of the basics." - Dr. Buning

This is the foundation of how we can help athletes improve their mental performance, by modeling it!

A big piece of mental performance is the ability to stay present...
If we as the coach, cannot stay focused on the present moment for whatever reason, it will be nearly impossible to develop that mental skill in our athletes.

Typically, it's our emotions that get in the way of effective modeling from coaches.

Ep. 8 with @brianmccormick is full of great stuff for coaches!

Here's our TOP 3 TAKEAWAYS...
1. Develop skills within the context of the game

There is a misconception that to develop skills, we must remove them from the game context and break them down in small pieces

If we want skills to transfer to the game, then develop the skills in context!
2. More Feedback is not always better

Too often players receive too much feedback from too many voices

Quality of feedback is more important than quantity

Players don't learn well when there are multiple voices and different pieces of feedback on each rep, so they tune it out.
