Most coaches say they want to develop leaders...

But very few actually develop leaders.

5 Steps to Develop Leaders

🧵 ⬇️
1️⃣ Model

Do you know your core values?

Can you explain how to operationalize (aka "live out") those values?

Do you actually live out those values as the coach?

If you don't model them, you won't be able to truly develop leaders.
And it starts with...

DWYSYWD

Do
What
You
Say
You
Will
Do

This is what modeling is all about.

Be a coach that does what they say they will do.

It builds trust and few things break trust faster than not doing what you have said you will do.
2️⃣ Inspire a Shared Vision

SHARED Vision

A vision is more powerful and attractive when it has been co-created!

Allow your team and athletes to have a voice in the process of determining what the vision is for your team.

We want our athletes to own it.
Bring this shared vision to life through intentional language.

"Make your teammate a hero today" is a central phrase that @RonSiersJr and the @SalisburyBB use.

Then, they define what that means!

What are the behaviors that bring this phrase to life?
Vision is more powerful when it's co-created!
3️⃣ Challenge the Process

What are you doing to be innovative and creative?

We must teach our athletes how to challenge the process and push for continual growth.

Here's 3 simple steps to begin challenging the process with your team...
1) Reflect

What did we want to happen?

What happened?

Why did it happen?

What did we learn?

2) Put together an action plan

How are we going to adjust?

What will we keep doing?

What will we do differently?

3) Move forward

Implement the plan!

Repeat the cycle.
4️⃣ Empower Others to Act

We want our athletes to take ownership!

It starts with building trust through vulnerability

There's a myth that trust proceeds vulnerability...

The reality is that vulnerability leads to trust

Once the trust is established...
We must provide meaningful ways for our athletes to have autonomy and make decisions that matter.

This only happens if we as the coach relinquish some control and trust our players to make decisions.
5️⃣ Encourage their Heart

Show your athletes true appreciate.

They are not pawns to be used in your game, they're human beings.

Celebrate small wins along the way.

Notice their progress.

Catch them doing it right.

Encourage their heart!

Here's a practical way to do that...
At @SalisburyBB they give out "The Rock" after each game.

It's quite literally, a rock.

@RonSiersJr painted it crimson and white, and after their games they award it to a player that lived out their values.

The winner of the rock writers their name on the rock, then...
They post their picture on social media with the rock.

Coach Siers will have players come up to him say things like this all the time...

"Coach, I gotta get my name on that rock."

It's a rock.

But it has significant meaning to those players and it reinforcers their culture.
It also recognizes them for their contributions.

We all want to feel valued and encouraged for what we bring to the team!

Find ways to consistently encourage the hearts of those you lead.
These 5 steps are taken from The Leadership Challenge research done by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.

Too often coaches provide feedback that doesn't help our players improve

If you want your players to improve faster...

Get better at giving aligned feedback!

Here’s a THREAD about what aligned feedback is, why it can be hard, and 3 steps to get better at it ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️
What is Aligned Feedback?

Aligned feedback is giving athletes feedback on the thing you’ve told them to focus on.

Sounds simple, right?

Simple, yes.

Easy, no.

Often coaches really struggle to do it and they’re not even aware of it...
When you make a stoppage to deliver feedback, deliver one piece of information, quickly, then get them playing again.

Once they resume play, give feedback on the ONE thing you make a stoppage to address.

It shows that you value their time and you're invested in developing them.

- Amount of time
- The focus
- Roles for coaches
- Supplies (balls, cones, etc)

Why you should worry less about culture and more about climate...

🧵👇
Culture is about the long-term vision we have for our team

Culture is also the result of whoever and whatever has come before us

Culture is the compounding of 1000s of small interactions over time
The word "culture" has become so popularized that coaches often feel we can just talk about it, then we have what we need.

Every coach wants a mentally tough team...

But how do you actually develop that?

3️⃣ TIPS to develop your athletes mental performance & toughness (and yours too)

from Ep. 24 with @DrBuning

🧵 ⬇️
1️⃣ It starts with modeling

"I often wonder if coaches just forget some of the basics." - Dr. Buning

This is the foundation of how we can help athletes improve their mental performance, by modeling it!

A big piece of mental performance is the ability to stay present...
If we as the coach, cannot stay focused on the present moment for whatever reason, it will be nearly impossible to develop that mental skill in our athletes.

Typically, it's our emotions that get in the way of effective modeling from coaches.

Ep. 8 with @brianmccormick is full of great stuff for coaches!

Here's our TOP 3 TAKEAWAYS...
1. Develop skills within the context of the game

There is a misconception that to develop skills, we must remove them from the game context and break them down in small pieces

If we want skills to transfer to the game, then develop the skills in context!
2. More Feedback is not always better

Too often players receive too much feedback from too many voices

Quality of feedback is more important than quantity

Players don't learn well when there are multiple voices and different pieces of feedback on each rep, so they tune it out.
