Today I’m going to talk about this ‘Full Slate’ the NDP had in #Elxn44

There were amazing candidates on there. In fact, our grassroots is full of people perfect for the job - and determined to do the work.

But it wasn’t what it looked like.

And the stories keep rolling in…
Sure, we filled every spot.

But how did we get there?

Was it democratic? No

Did locals get a say in their candidates? Mostly, no.

Did it impact our result? Absolutely!

#cdnpoli
December 2019, just after the election, a group of Toronto area candidates gathered for dinner.

Guest caller: Jagmeet

He makes us all a promise.

To thank us for our commitment, our dedication to the movement, he tells us…
The NDP wanted to be able to go to Trudeau - ready to force an election if needed.

Jagmeet told us gathered that they would get us approved as candidates as easily and as quickly as possible.

A minority government we needed to be ready - right?

I guess not…(con’t)
Instead - they focused on the incumbents first.

Returning candidates were refused vetting packages, most - for over a year.

I didn’t receive mine until April 2020.

And remember, Jagmeet promised a streamlined process for returnees.
We clearly weren’t serious about getting this ‘full slate’ going.

No value placed on maintaining a presence in the places that needed growth.

There were countless potential candidates ignored for months and months. Some never heard back.

It was a massive failure. Of strategy.
So what happened during rush to fill the #NDP slate?

We appointed a lot of candidates who had never stepped inside their riding.

I’d like HQ to answer: How many parachute candidates were there?

And why were the local Ridings bypassed over and over again?
This #Elxn44 our locals had next to no say in who their candidates would be.

I know 4 Ridings in ON, active groups, who found out who their candidate was from the candidate themselves.

Two were never told a local team existed.

There is clear disdain for the local at the #NDP
Meddling in our local candidate searches has been a point of contention between grassroots & strategists in Ottawa for a long time.

This is what the delay was all about.

They tried to handpick every one.

And they failed - this undermining of the local cost us time & votes.
#NDP Ridings were finding out who their candidate was right as the writ dropped - many after.

That means no signs preordered. No nomination meeting to raise local $

No local literature has been ordered. No relationship w/community built.

Set up for failure by design.
All of this. All of these issues in the @NDP all cycle back to

Access vs. Control

They are willing to trade grassroots growth and accessibility to politics, for a tight control over their membership.

What are you afraid we’ll do should you empower us?

So why didn’t I run again?

Because I spoke up.

I ran for Party President last minute on a platform to challenge the divestment of resources from the #NDP grassroots.

We ran to challenge an establishment slate that was bound to continue this strategy.
Over 30% of the Convention delegates agreed with us.

We exposed the rebate debacle for what it was. We challenged their handling of Convention, and their refusal to make the space accessible.

We challenged the National Director’s vision.

That was in April 2020.
The @NDP have cut off all contact since I publicly challenged them.

To me and @NDPYorkSimcoe - of which I am President.

Not one returned phone call or email. Not even when the writ dropped.

They tried to erase us.

NDP federal council took the rebates from the local Ridings and poured it all into @theJagmeetSingh’s image and campaign.

We invested nothing in the ground.

Two elections : Down 11 seats.

PPC made more gains than us.

We’re not a movement. We’re an ad campaign.

@NDP
It gets better. Those links to donate to your local? They don’t all work.

Many of them go directly to Central, even with active Riding Associations.

#NDP
This leaves many Riding Associations unable to even use the standard system (Populus) available for NDP campaigns.

The Party still charges the Ridings almost $1700 for the use of a website and Populus.

This is beyond the budgets of many.
