In the fight for our liberation, we must always choose our own heroes. Accepting that we can’t change what happened to Jordan is hard, but it helps to know that we have the power to shape how his story is told.
It is our privilege and responsibility to share both how much Jordan’s life meant to his family and friends and what his death now means for our community.
Jordan’s death was, and will always be, a call to action.
It was in Jordan’s name that we delivered hundreds of meals, distributed reparations to dozens of Black families, & housed folx who had no place to go during the winter storm. Jordan’s Place became a space of Black beauty, Black autonomy, & Black community. #MTB
That’s how we will remember the park forever & we will perpetually strive to maintain that spirit of resistance at 2300 Rosewood.
When you hear Jordan Walton’s name, we hope what comes to mind are all the efforts his community makes, day in and day out, to reclaim his narrative from the state.
When someone cries #BlackLivesMatter, remember Jordan. When you raise your Black fist in defiance of an oppressive system, imagine Jordan right there beside you.
The ruling class have, for centuries, planted seeds of misinformation in our minds, allowing the oppressive conditions to which it subjects us to nurture those seeds until forests of lies are all that remain.
This Saturday, September 25th, 400+1 will host its monthly demonstration in a continued effort to establish an autonomous zone in East Austin in Jordan’s honor.
We believe that a Black autonomous zone where resources are socialized and public safety is democratized could have saved Jordan’s life. And now, with Jordan as our inspiration, we’re going to save someone else’s.
1. Volunteer, on the spot, for a simultaneous community canvass of Orisha Land. We’ll set you up with a mini-canvassing training, a campaign t-shirt, canvassing materials & support from 400+1’s Orisha Land Defender, KT.
4. Join 400+1’s Ministers of Cohesion at the #MartialtheBlock and Reproductive Revolution stations to learn about the broader political context of the demonstration and get more deeply involved with 400+1.
5. Settle in for a community dinner at the end of the evening.
Due to security concerns that developed during & after Aug’s demo, nonBlack ppl who are not members of CREAM or The Ally Ship may not attend this month’s demo. That said, non-Black folx can come 1-3 pm to join & be preliminarily vetted. Those who do will be admitted to the event.
As always, reparations support will be distributed to all Black participants.
The demonstration will go from 3:00 p.m. until nightfall.
We choose vanguardism because the conditions under which we’ve organized for the past 6 years demand that a group of committed Black revolutionaries create a political climate in which poor & wc Black people can fight for their own liberation.
Poor & working class Black people are overburdened by the realities of oppression. They are not, under normal circumstances, in positions to study extensively, train relentlessly, or organize tirelessly in preparation for war.
400+1 is engaged in a protracted struggle for Orisha Land, an autonomous home for Black folx to be free from state sanctioned violence. This thread is meant to provide further context & communicate next steps following the state’s dismantling of Jordan’s Place. #martialtheblock
400+1 is martialing the block for Jordan Walton because:
✊🏿 We believe in establishing a government that employs trained and compassionate professionals to determine what risk individuals experiencing mental health crises pose to themselves and others. #maritaltheblock
According to a 2018 report, Austin Police has the worst reputation in the nation for killing people experiencing mental health crises. Police Departments, especially APD, are not qualified to respond to mental health emergencies. Police don’t keep anyone in these situations safe
Jordan Walton was murdered by APD on February 10th. Before Jordan’s murder, his family contacted law enforcement and the mental health crisis hotline to make them aware that Jordan was experiencing a bipolar episode, that he was schizophrenic & that they were concerned for him.
During the alleged standoff between APD and Jordan, Austin Police Department spoke to Jordan’s mother extensively. She shared *again* that Jordan was experiencing a mental health crisis.
400+1 has distributed over 300 meals, redistributed reparations to 115 families, and housed 14 people. We directed traffic where lights failed to function and delivered water where The City had none to offer.
Each time we showed up, each time we offered support, we communicated to those receiving the help that this was not charity. That, in fact, this was an opportunity for them to recognize the failure of both capitalism and the state and to reject them.
Each time we gave something away, we asked for something in return: investment in revolutionary struggle.
