During the Blitz on Britain in World War II, Britain relocated its manufacturing industries to Canada, Australia and South Africa, its predominantly "white colonies". Much of the bombs and munitions were manufactured in mine workshops on the Rand.
Besides this tens of thousands of Africans from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa were mobilized to fight the Germans in North Africa, France and Italy.
After the war Britain was in ruins and it was African gold and diamonds that paid its war debts to the USA and aided its economic recovery. The opening up of the Free State Gold Fields was central to this recovery.
Africa is the continent that keeps on giving to the global economy, yet receives hardly anything in return. The wealth of the Northern Hemisphere is predicated on the poverty of Africa.
