Close call this morning.

I was out with Ric and heard an animal call in the next yard. It was a soft semi-bark. I tried to see what was making it, thought it might be a fox.

And then I saw a bobcat. Looking at me. I grabbed for Ric.
Ric, as he sometimes does, decided that I was the Anti-Cat and performed his defensive maneuvers. Both cats know how to wriggle out of their harnesses, and I knew that preventing that was essential.
The bobcat came closer, sat on the wall. I shouted and waved my hands, and the cat retreated. This upset Ric even more, and Zooey howled from the window.
Ric by now was un-pick-uppable. He sat in a place closer to the door (fortunately) and occasionally hissed and growled at me. The bobcat returned to the wall. I shouted and threw a trowel at them. They ran.

I opened the door and urged Ric in. He hissed at me.
Zooey howled some more. I messed with Ric's leash, and he jumped closer to the door and looked at it. (yay) I opened the door, and he ran in.
He still has his leash and harness on, but he has come out from behind the sofa, and Zooey is sitting with him.

The most worrisome scenario I've envisioned has been that a bobcat or coyote would run toward one of the cats and take it when we're out.
It looks like the bobcat has another ploy. Sound like a relatively innocuous animal and lure your prey. Smart.

I think we won't do our outdoors walk for another week or so.
The bobcat is still out there, making those noises. I was going to clean the birdbaths, but not now.
Ric is still upset and not letting me remove his leash and harness. I'm not sure he was ever aware of the bobcat.
Naturecam photos from yesterday and early this morning. I think the camera is turned off, but I also think I won't go out for a while. The bobcat is afraid of me, particularly when I shout and make myself big, but not taking chances.

Don't forget - the photos have alt-text. Black and white night naturecam photo of mother bobcat and kMother bobcat and kitten cropped out of previous photo. MothBobcat in lower right of photo, striding and looking back. T
Might have been the mother cat talking to her kitten. "Now wait here, and mama will bring you a delicious brunch."
Zooey and Ric are sitting together. Zooey is a good buddy.
I dispensed treats at the eating area, although the cats were not there, and I managed to get the leash off Ric with only a little hiss. He just came into the office and allowed me to pet him, but he is still wearing the harness.
Ric let me take off his harness. I gave him coming-in treats, and he was pleased. Zooey is still looking out the window, but I didn't see or hear anything.
All's well that ends well. On the left, Ric is curled up asleep on a red sofa. To his l
Update: The bobcats were very active overnight and this morning. Probably stirred up by yesterday's encounter. Didn't see any when I went out to get the memory chip and this morning's paper.

No walk outdoors for Zooey and Ric this morning, and they were okay with that.

The @nytimes and @DLeonhardt went to some trouble to make this graphic look good for Republicans!

ping @DougJBalloon Graphic titled "Vaccination rates and 2020 U.S. electio
@nytimes @DLeonhardt Intuitively, people tend to expect higher scores to be better. I certainly do and had to take a minute to understand the graph. But these higher scores are for vaccine refusers because that's what the vertical axis measures.
@nytimes @DLeonhardt So the more people voted for Trump in a state, the more vaccine refusers there are. Hoocoodanode?

But most people won't take the time to figure out a counterintuitive graph and will get the general impression that Trumpies are somehow better.

Which has been the Times message.

The @nytimes article and a tweet from one of its authors suggesting that Ron DeSantis's approach to killing Floridians may become a model for other states have a strong air of the Great Barrington Declaration. 1/

@nytimes I linked to the Wikipedia article because the GBD website is unavailable now.

Their idea is to let Covid rip through the population to establish herd immunity, while allegedly protecting the more vulnerable. 2/
DeSantis may believe that he is doing something like that - there was a push to vaccinate the elderly, but he has banned masks in schools. Perhaps he also believes that Covid is no big deal for children. 3/

I'm going to highlight tweets in this long thread. The preceding tweets explain that PCR assays measure ALL viral RNA present, which is not the same as infective RNA. It could be pieces of RNA that the immune system has chewed up and spit out.
So when the CDC tells us that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people both shed virus, they are talking about RNA, and we don't know how much of it is infective. Probably much less for vaccinated people.

As I've said about a hundred and fifty times in the last few days, we need to do more than you think to get control of exponential increase. So mask up!

I see nothing so far in the reporters' revelation books about the former administration that we didn't know at some level at the time.

Does that mean it's okay for the reporters to have held back details so they can make money on the books?
Does that mean it's okay for multiple outlets to hype those details and subject us, once more, to the horrors of the Trump administration? Just for clicks?
I would answer the first question "no." A reporter's job is to report the news. If it's news now, it was news then. And perhaps it would have stirred people to do more about the damage Trump was doing.

I would answer the second question "no," with reservations.

If General Milley was concerned about a coup, why didn't he go public?

Let's think about what might have happened if he did. 🧵
The media might not have let him. They have been extremely protective of Trump and their imagined image of him.
If he had gotten past the media's pearl-clutching, would he have been believed? Certainly by some part of the population, but Trump-adjacent politicians in particular would rapidly attack him and the media.

@Joshua_Pollack When I feel hopeless about the pandemic never ending, I remind myself that it will.

Globally, people will receive the vaccine or they will get sick. Some of the sick will become immune or will die. Either way, they will be taken out of the susceptible pool. 1/
@Joshua_Pollack The susceptible pool will continue to decrease, so eventually the pandemic will become manageable.

We need to increase production of vaccines so that more are vaccinated more quickly. That will decrease the number of deaths. 2/
@Joshua_Pollack I take the reports of vaccine-resistant variants and waning of immunity with a grain of salt. Much of this looks to me to be wildly overblown. If we have a base of vaccinated people, we have time to deal with it. We're unlikely to have a variant that makes us start from zero. 3/
