the developer is a swiss non-profit

the project procurement was through a design competition, not a 'request for proposal'

the brief called out for high quality projects, innovation in construction, mix of unit types and affordability.
rent for a 4 bedroom apartment runs about $1200 a month

why are we unable to do anything close to this in the US?
the diversity in unit sizes is really intriguing.

we almost never see this in US development.

it would all be studios or 1 BR units, with maybe a handful of 2 bedroom units at corners.

the ROW is 66' wide at woodland park ave N

it's jarring that the buildings here are so low...

but here's the thing about a 66' wide, rarely used ROW...

we could do 2 things

1. we could close it off and turn it into open space, with limited access for adjacent homeowners.

which would actually be kinda rad because you're in a valley here, have to climb to get to parks
2. you could copy/paste this energy positive, prefab-friendly, social housing down the middle of every block.

it's a whopping 29'-6" deep. this would leave space for cars on one side (12') and a massive, wide sidewalk on the other :)

the KPOe in graz pushed for the land at the hummel baracks (hummelkaserne) to be used for social housing.

there is now a massive mass timber passivhaus complex by sps architekten there

it's interesting to me that in the US, we're adding new apartments at the ground level of existing buildings - because in such poor foresight, this area was space for cars.

whereas in DE/AT - they're adding new apartments above the existing roof level, even in newer buildings.
there are some really intriguing projects by @OpenScopeStudio/@markasaurus that have been infilling multifamily ADUs in former garage/storage spaces. openscopestudio.com/multifamily-ad…
but in built up cities that aren't dominated by detached houses - there's a lot of potential for new housing.

TU darmstadt study found that an additional 1,5 million new homes could be added to existing buildings by vertical additions (aufstockungen)
