Niche selection vs analysis paralysis, it's a fine line.
To avoid procrastinating when building content sites, I use a *very* simple checklist before I do anything.
My philosophy for building content sites:
Niche sites are places to experiment + generate additional income. I don't want to spend all my time building, managing or putting all my eggs in one basket.
I want to front load content, get it ranked, revisit + improve.
So based on that, here are the things I look for when deciding to build out a site.
🔵 Domains
✔️ .com available, ideally an aged domain to speed things up
✔️ domain under $2k (i'm a one man band + self-funded so budget is important)
🟢 SEO
✔️ want to see low DR sites ranking in the SERPs (+ forums, Quora, Reddit ect)
✔️ E-A-T - if i've got to hire experts, spend ages getting citations, get trust signals etc, i don't want to be in that niche
🟠 Topics/keywords
✔️ evergreen topic - i don't want to have to keep up to date with a fast changing industry (unless I'm interested in it)
✔️ 100+ low comp KWs - at least initially, i want to generate cashflow by ranking for lots of keywords monetised with ads
🔴 Monetisation
✔️ can i make money w/ display ads - it's the most 'passive' income stream IMHO
✔️ can i potentially make a digital product to sell later down the line to diversify (+ be less reliant on ads)
General notes:
* I run through these checks quickly, under 15 mins
* use criteria important to YOU
* example: I don't avoid affiliate, but I treat it as a bonus income stream to ads. You may be the opposite & that's fine
* sometimes I disregard everything & go with my gut
That's it. Just 8 simple checks to run through before starting a content site.
DISCLAIMER: I find it helpful to run through these checks before committing to anything. BUT I still have too many half-finished projects
...so take my advice with a grain of salt 🧂
