Electric scooter buying advice🛵🇮🇳

Last year, I got my #Ather450X for Rs 1.7L in Mumbai Understandably, a lot of people were surprised to see a scooter cost so much, especially one which they assumed to be inferior to ICE ones

Important advice if you’re looking to get an e2W:
Ever since Ola’s entry into the space, the question shifted to “why buy something so expensive when you can get a cheaper and better scooter from #OlaElectric?”

Considering how many people have shown interest, here are some factors to keep in mind before dropping the ₹
Firstly, let’s start with the price. The Ola S1 costs 1L while the S1 Pro will set you back 1.3L

In comparison, the Ather 450+ goes for 1.03L and 1.22L for the 450X (BOM) rendering the price comparisons moot.

Ather was quick to pass on the new state subsidies to the consumers
...While Ola didn’t change the prices of its scooters with the amendments.

Unless OE had a major insider tip that a new subsidy was on the way and shared post-subsidy pricing directly.

State subsidies are given directly to the OEM and not the consumer

Another factor that a lot of youth and 1st-time EV buyers need to remember is that electric vehicles are extremely tricky products & should never be bought just on claims

Wait for deliveries, verify actual range, let service and charging networks ramp up
techradar.com/in/news/ather-…
Ather Energy is not only the oldest one in this segment, but also the most established one.

8 years
3 models
Thousands of successful deliveries
Functional factory
Hundreds of charging points
Millions of KMs of ride data

Nobody else comes close

I am not saying that Ola is a scam, but your final decision should not be driven by claims and introductory discounts

Nobody outside the company has ever driven the Ola electric scooter, and even the testing vehicles spotted on the road have been sub-par

Also keep in mind that the Ola S1 hasn’t been designed or validated in India for India. The design has been directly acquired from Dutch company Etergo, and will be modified when it goes into mass production

techradar.com/in/news/ola-el…
Talking about manufacturing, Ola’s Future factory is far from ready, with full-fledged operations ~3 months away. There’s a reason why no photos of the assembly line have been seen yet (because they don’t exist)

Interesting to see how the October delivery timeline will be met
Needless to say, Ola’s Hypercharger network of 100K charging points is similarly too good to be true

Even if you have all the resources in the world, charging stations are very difficult to set up, especially in metro cities

Ather has ~500

Science class: scooters are not supposed to be fast-charged all the time. The battery degradation will be immense if a user relies on the network for all of their needs. Use them only for emergencies

Slow, home charging is the only way to go

wired.co.uk/article/how-to…
Fun fact: even young startup Simple Energy has been able to give test rides to media (prototypes), while Ola has not.

Observations are embargoed but it is as good as one would expect and was definitely not a modified Ather as some conspiracies stated

techradar.com/news/simple-en…
Notably, Simple Energy has been prompt at returning the amounts of those who wanted refunds

A lot of people who pre-ordered Ola have been complaining about no refunds or even communication

They are also charging extra for helmet & registration, which are supposed to be included
I also fail to understand why there is so much hate around the Simple One electric scooter

It has far fewer ridiculous claims, has a factory in place, has a real vehicle, all investment info is publicly available, and has sensible delivery timelines of early 2022

PR ≠ proof
Conclusion: I really hope whatever Ola has claimed is true. It could change the face of India as an EV market

But till the claims are verified, hold on to your money or go with an already available alternative

“There are many like Lucid Motors and Faraday Future, but there’s only one Tesla”

Correction: Ola's new pricing with state subsidies has been confirmed
I apologise for misleading
