Blue-Red? More like blue-gray. In this summer delta wave, COVID19 has so far affected mainly affected the Confederacy with deaths mostly among unvaccinated in defiance of vaccines. The most self-defeating act I’ve ever personally witnessed. All victims of antiscience aggression
This morning I will speak with @AliVelshi@VelshiMSNBC about reaching out terrible 700,000 US death toll from COVID19. Will emphasize how we had the tools to stop this much earlier, and avert maybe the last 200,000 deaths. But we failed to take antiscience aggression seriously
I’ve written a series of articles about this in @PLOSBiology@sciam@jclinicalinvest that make the following case: antiscience aggression is well organized, well funded, and a deliberate/essential element of authoritarian control and power from the right journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…
It’s roots go back almost 90 years when Stalin wielded antiscience aggression as part of his purges journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…
Being asked about some of my pre-pandemic articles warning about the the rise of the antivaccine lobby and links to political extremism on the right. Will post a few in this thread. This one from @PLOS@PLOSMedicine in 2016 journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/a…
Death toll resulting from the ivermectin-antimask-antivaccine antiscience aggression launched by the political right, conservative news outlets, even elected members of US Congress, red state Gov’s in 2020-21 will haunt our nation for years, if not decades nytimes.com/2021/10/03/us/…
1/5 Many thanks @JohnBerman@brikeilarcnn for hosting me @NewDay on breaking news that the Merck & co drug molnupiravir looking promising as a small molecule antiviral drug for Rx of COVID19 to reduce hospitalizations and deaths. Merck applying for EUA. Exciting but some caveats
2/5 first good news that drug was developed as a ribonucleoside inhibitor @EmoryUniversity@GeorgiaStateU for influenza to interfere with virus replication, unlike ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine this one actually makes sense that it could work vs COVID19 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
3/5 one concern that it introduces virus mutations or potential mutagenic probably means it won’t be recommended in pregnancy. I seem to remember my good colleague @RickABright had a concern about this drug when he was at BARDA so maybe he can comment. Also important to remember
Many thanks @NicolleDWallace for hosting me @DeadlineWH with @jemelehill (really an honor to be on with you Jemele!) on statements from @NBA stars on why they won’t vaccinate or why it’s a “personal choice” here’s why I pushed back on their statements…
First, we're losing 2,000 American lives to COVID-19 daily, it's a leading cause of death in the US, almost all deaths among the unvaccinated, we're in one of the worst public health crises in US history...
Second, I spend every waking hour I'm not in the lab/lab meetings for our vaccine, convincing people to vaccine. On Sat AM I went on @officialKTSU909 the radio station of Houston's HBCU, Sun Night with @DZCofield, Wed AM @newsmax, today speaking at the Latino Health Summit..
This is not correct, individuals who become infected with COVID19 and recover exhibit highly variable levels of protective immunity vs reinfection. Some have protection, others very little or none. If you are infected and recovered, it’s still important for you to get vaccinated.
For instance, if you remember when we were looking at the convalescent (infected and recovered) sera controls in the mRNA vaccination studies, there was tremendous variability/heterogeneity in virus neutralizing antibodies nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
Then the Nussenzweig’s group @RockefellerUniv published in @nature that those who were infected but then vaccinated developed really robust responses, with even epitope broadening to make you resilient vs variants nature.com/articles/s4158…
1/3 Woke up haunted by the graphics in @DLeonhardt@nytimes article yesterday entitled "Red Covid", but it's more than this, it really is a red slaughter or massacre. More than 100,000 American lives lost needlessly because of vaccine defiance/refusal in order to belong...
2/3 Despite widely available safe/effective vaccines they chose to succumb to what I term antscience aggression. In "antiscience kills" I've drawn a parallel to how Soviet peasants died in 1930s/40s by starvation from Lysenko vernalization pseudoscience journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…
3/3 Antiscience aggression is now a leading cause of death in America. In the last half of 2021 we'll ultimately lose 200,000 Americans from this red massacre, an authoritarian movement which now also targets scientists journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…
