In simpler terms what happened to #Facebook is that its DNS has been deleted...
Basically tis like- in a super huge maze labyrinth like mall- the records containing stall numbers, layout, contact deets of the people inside the stalls have all been deleted (1)

So imagine peeps came back from a holiday- now no one (those who work at the stall & outsiders) know how to get around the mall or go to the stalls. Because they don't have the layout and they can't find the exact stalls they are looking for. (2)
Plus they don't know where to go cos the mall is so huge and like a labyrinth, that without the layout map they'd be lost.
So #Facebook essentially lost such records. That's what the DNS holds.

And try to get things to work again. And the reason, #WhatsApp #Instagram is down cos the FB DNS was linked with those. And if you used your FB acc to sign up for sth, you might be not log in cos...the record book is lost, and that means your record, your profile is gone too (4)
And also FB's DNS and servers are all handled internally, so currently the possibility of it being an external hacking issue is extremely low.
