The pay scale of Sub-Inspectors is not uniform and varies from state to state.
Moreover, depending on the group a sub-inspector qualifies into, also alters the pay structure.
Take for example:
Sub-Inspector (GD) in CAPF, who is level 6 and group B, comes under pay band 2 which in turn corresponds to a pay scale of INR 35,400 to INR 1,12,400
Sub Inspector - Executive (Male/ Female) in Delhi Police, who is also level 6 and group B, underpay band 2 receives the same pay scale of INR 35,400 to INR 1,12,400
A sub-inspector in UP, in contrast, receives a pay scale of INR 9,300 to INR 34,800
First, let us take a look at the salary breakup of an SI in Delhi Police.
With a pay scale of INR 35,400 to INR 1,12,400, the basic pay stands at INR 35,400
The salary discussion would be incomplete without mentioning the additional perks/allowances.
The Dearness Allowance (DA) is 12% of basic pay.
The idea of dearness allowance was introduced to help employees cope with price hikes (what we call inflation).
This is provided to both working employees and pensioners.
A Dearness Allowance is 12% of Basic Pay would amount to INR 4,248
Dearness Allowance is directly linked with the consumer price index (CPI).
This basically means that the DA component of the salary is variable and it increases proportionally with the CPI every year.
The Dearness Allowance or DA is the same for class X, Class Y and Class Z regions
Note: The CPI measures the fluctuations or average changes in price that a consumer has to pay for a basket of goods and services (food, transportation, medical care etc) over time.
The House Rent Allowance (HRA) is approximately INR 8,496.
Note:
Dearness Allowance must not be confused with the House Rent Allowance as they are two separate entities and are treated differently with respect to income tax.
One major difference is that House Rent Allowance applies to both private and public sector employees, whereas only public sector employees are eligible for receiving Dearness Allowance.
Moreover, there are certain tax exemptions applicable to House Rent Allowance which are not applicable for the DA.
The HRA is also known as House Rent Allowance, and Transport Allowance or TA are location-dependent and usually vary based on the location of posting (class X, class Y or class Z).
Class X - The 8 metro cities constitute class X (formerly class A-1 -Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Greater Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata - cities with a population of 50 lakh people or more)
Class Y consists of around 100 towns in India with a population above 5 lakh people and below 50 lakhs. The state capitals also fall under this category.
Class Z consists of rural areas in India (and cities with a population of fewer than 5 lakhs)
The Travel Allowance (TA) is INR 3,600
Other extra allowances including petrol, diet, and such add up to INR 500 to INR 700 per month.
The gross monthly salary is the sum of basic pay, dearness allowance, House rent allowance, transport allowance, and other allowances.
The Gross Monthly Salary will be around INR 52,400
Deductions of approximately INR 5,000 to INR 6,000 will be applied, taking the Total In Hand Monthly Salary to around INR 46,000 or INR 47,000.
For comparison, let us now look at the salary breakup of an SI in UP
As per the 7th pay commission, the pay scale of a UP Sub-Inspector is INR 9,300 to INR 34,800
The Grade pay corresponds to INR 4,200
Dearness Allowance and House rent allowance total up to INR 13,500
The gross monthly salary ranges from INR 27,900 to INR 1,04,400
Considering deductions to be around INR 4,000 to INR 24,000, the In-Hand Salary becomes INR 24,000 to INR 80,400
Also, take a look at the list of allowances a UP Sub-Inspector is entitled to:
1. Medical facility 2. Loan facility 3. Provident fund 4. Gratuity
The monthly or annual salary of a sub-inspector of police goes up significantly when he/she gets promoted or has years of experience.
The associated benefits and applicable allowances also increase proportionately.
