A THREAD on the $30 billion HBCU cut lie: It's a lie. Critical thinking and understanding context have officially died in America. So folks are sharing this propaganda recklessly. So let me give some facts. 1/
Fact: "Each year, the federal government disperses about $1 billion to HBCUs through a mix of 15 programs such as Pell Grants and research and development contracts."
You can cut 30 from 1. Simple math. 2/ amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/61…
In a bipartisan way, Congress has really supported HBCUs during the pandemic. Under previous administration, almost $1B in additional support went to HBCUs through the CARES Act. 3/ uncf.org/news/uncf-plea…
Under President Biden's American Rescue Plan, HBCUs received an additional $2.6 billion. 4/ ed.gov/news/press-rel…
About that cut again. Biden-Harris pledged $70B to HBCUs & other MSIs. There has never been a proposal that audacious. 5/ yr.media/news/hbcus-get…
Biden has gone big before. His 2022 budget proposal wss $6B, more than the record $4.8B proposed by President Trump. 6/ cbsnews.com/news/biden-bud…
And if you look within that budget, there are big proposed increases for annual HBCU funding. Compare the 2021 figure with the 2022 request. The $80M for HBCUs is the FUTURE Act Trump gets credit for signing but never advocated for. Biden proposed a three-fold increase. 7/
If you want to talk about cuts, look at Trump's 2020 education budget. You see lots of zero's, including line g which is the line item for the FUTURE Act that Trump eventually signed. This is a reminder he let it die before Congress funded it. That's more of a cut. 8/
Since partisan politics is now involved, Biden's ambitious agenda is being scaled back. So the HBCU funding proposal, along with lots of others, have been revised. This happens all the time, both up and down. 9/ washingtonpost.com/education/2021…
So the UNCF presidents are lobbying to increase funding. It would be easier if in a bipartisan way everyone supported the funding, but that has yet to happen. 10/ diverseeducation.com/leadership-pol…
There has not been a cut in funding. Stop trying to penalize Biden for at least putting a big number out there. Remember Benjamin Mays said, "Not failure, but low aim is sin." And no one said anything when there was no HBCU dollar amount attached to the "Platinum Plan." 11/11
(we need an edit button) Here is 2/ again:
Fact: "Each year, the federal government disperses about $1 billion to HBCUs through a mix of 15 programs such as Pell Grants and research and development contracts."
You CAN'T cut 30 from 1. Simple math. amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/61…

Since I've found so many new found HBCU advocates, I need y'all to do more than just tweet about the reduction in the proposed budget for HBCUs. First though you need to get the facts. Watch today, 12 pm ET/11 CT. 1/
Support the #HBCUIgnite Act. The @UNCF has a great platform that makes it easy to write, call or tweet members of Congress to express your support. Put those twitter fingers to good use! 3/ uncf.org/hbcuignite
THREAD: Excited for commencement this week, and realized (1) how much I missed be in person last year and (2) this will be my 17th commencement as president (DAG!) So I'm going to share some pics from each of the past 16 commencements.
A Trump Town Hall reminder. Man, the HBCU story continues to grow. Here is the president tonight. 1/
Reminder 1: In his FY20 budget he zeroed out the program he is now saying he funded. Look at line G. There was $79M in FY19, 0 in FY20 President's budget. 2/
He never publicly advocated for the funding, including while speaking at the HBCU week conference the month the program ended. 3/ medium.com/@HipHopPrez/us…
The reason he can keep saying he funded HBCUs “because nobody was funding them for years and years” is because his supporters have no interest in HBCUs enough to ask basic questions. Really quick thread. 1/
The Higher Education Act of 1965 created a program so that HBCUs could receive Federal funds. So that's 55 years. 2/ repository.upenn.edu/cgi/viewconten…
The Higher Education Act amendment in 1986 created annual, Federal funding for HBCUs, indicating “the current state of Black colleges & universities [was] partly attributable to the discriminatory actions of the States and the Federal Government.” 3/ secure.aacte.org/apps/rl/res_ge…
A PLATINUM THREAD: When President Trump launched his Platinum Plan in Atlanta, he spent a few minutes discussing HBCUs. Watch the clip, and then read the fact check. 1/
Trump claimed Obama and Biden cut funding for HBCUs in their first year. Backstory: In 2007 the Title III F program was created by the College Cost Reduction Act signed by George W. Bush. 2/ nasfaa.org/news-item/2379…
