Figuring out what to bring on a hiking trip can seem like a daunting task, but it's easier than you might think to stay dry, warm, hydrated, and safe. Here’s are a few must-haves from our Hiking 101 guide: wired.trib.al/qeZAIdG 1/7
One of the biggest beginner mistakes is to not bring water or food, even on short hikes. A Good Water Bottle is a must-have. Metal water bottles can be unnecessarily heavy for longer trips, so you can't go wrong with a classic Nalgene bottle wired.trib.al/6H9JpdW 2/7
You won't have any fun on a hike—of any length—if you have bloody blisters on your feet. For moderate temperatures, we prefer low-top, non-Gore-Tex mesh trail shoes, such as the Salomon X Ultra 3 wired.trib.al/k0263MR 3/7
You're probably not in active danger on a popular, well-traveled beginner trail. But until you're more experienced, you’ll need to be prepared. Petzel’s headlamp will keep you on the right path and let you have your hands free. wired.trib.al/IcERg5v 4/7
When it rains, it pours. A great raincoat makes all the difference. Water-resistant jackets can be categorized as hard or soft shells. Hardshells are less susceptible to soaking through. We recommend the Mountain Hardwear Exposure 2 Rain Jacket. wired.trib.al/lGjI77i 5/7
Now that you have all your gear, you need something to carry it all in. The most important aspect of a backpack is that it fits you properly. The Mountain Hardwear UL 20L Backpack is a great day backpack. wired.trib.al/MGX9ZXc 6/7

iOS 15 has finally arrived and is now available to download. Here are a few privacy settings you might
want to change after you get the update installed on your phone: wired.trib.al/UnTbel2 1/7
Apple’s new Mail Privacy Protection stops email senders from seeing your IP address by routing it through multiple proxy servers & randomly assigning you another IP address. To turn it on, go to Settings, Mail, Privacy Protection and toggle Protect Mail Activity to on. 2/7
Uncover what data your app uses with Apple’s App Privacy Report—turn it on by going into the Privacy section. Tap on Record App Activity & toggle the option to on. This allows you to see how many times an app has accessed your photos, camera, microphone, & contacts. 3/7

Science and religion have often been at odds. Still, scientists are exploring spiritual practices and rituals to understand their influence, and when appropriate, create new techniques and therapies informed by them. wired.trib.al/ohja2k2 1/9
Suppose we remove theology from the day-to-day practice of religious faith. In that case, the animosity in the debate evaporates, leaving us with a series of rituals, customs, and sentiments that are themselves the results of experiments. 2/9
Over thousands of years, these experiments have led to the design of what scientists call spiritual technologies—tools and processes meant to soothe, move, convince, or otherwise tweak the mind. 3/9

When Ksenia Coffman started editing Wikipedia, she thought of it as a fun new hobby. She didn't expect to spend years of her life in an all-out edit war with Nazi fanboys. wired.trib.al/VTbHDfy 1/7
But as Coffman clicked through articles about the Second World War, one of her favorite subjects, she kept finding disturbing inaccuracies. There were genocidal commanders painted as reluctant killers, fascist propaganda-pushers cited as legitimate historians. 2/7 Image
This was about more than a few rinky-dink Wikipedia pages. This was a warping of historical memory. It was enough to turn Coffman’s hobby into an obsession. 3/7
