I am over the moon we're on the front cover of @bmj_latest !
Our article: How could we enable low carbon behaviours to reach #NetZero for food & transport?* ow.ly/urXc50Gm1f3@MarteauTM@NickJChater
*more plant-based diets, active travel & public transport; less driving.

💡Diet and land travel are key sectors for health and sustainability
⛽️Food production is 26% and land travel 12% of global GHG emissions
⚰️Outdoor air pollution leads to more deaths than HIV&malaria combined: nature.com/articles/natur…

Current govt policies are insufficient to rapidly decarbonise & reach #NetZero
We need policies led by evidence and citizens' values. Citizens' assemblies often recommend more ambitious climate policies than govts'.
What are some of the changes we need to reach #NetZero land travel?
💸Low cost public transport
🛢️Remove fossil fuel subsidies
🚌Frequent, reliable, integrated public transport networks
♿️Wheelchairs, bikes, pushchairs access on buses&trams&trains
/4
Transport changes continued!
🛑Low traffic neighbourhoods
💶Congestion zone charging
🚴♀️More, safer bike and walking routes
🔒Secure bike storage
🚵Subsidies and better financing for electric and cargo bikes
See our paper for evidence and examples: ow.ly/urXc50Gm1f3 /5
For #NetZero diets?
⬇️Reduce prices of healthy plant-based foods
🥦More veg and fewer meat options on menus
👀Prominent positioning for healthy plant-based options
⬇️Reduce portion&package sizes of ultra processed foods, meat and dairy
🐄Remove livestock subsidies
We focus on social innovation and behaviour change in these recommendations.
Technological innovation is important, but will be insufficient by itself for rapid decarbonisation.
We need demand side, not just supply side solutions, see: nature.com/articles/s4155…

Some people don't like the idea we need behaviour change to decarbonise.
I understand the reluctance, but let's remember how much recent behaviour change is *increasing* emissions. Such as SUV sales and aviation soaring. theguardian.com/environment/ng… /8
@bmj_latest@MarteauTM@NickJChater It also feels appropriate that it arrived on the same day I helped lead a local #WorldClimateMarch
Activism and academia go hand in hand for me. How can you carry out research on the severity of the climate&nature crises, and not campaign for action? worldclimatemarch.org /2
@MelHorrocks, you can now tell @AndyBurnhamGM that a British Medical Journal article agrees with you! 😉
Bikes on trams would improve public transport, help us reach #netzero travel & make travel more accessible.

Crunching some numbers:
🚄#HS2 's construction is 8-14 million tCO2 (~12)
🔌1 electric car (Nissan leaf)'s construction is ~10 tCO2
🚘The UK has ~44.5 million petrol&diesel cars
🤯Replacing them all with EVs would take 445 million tCO2 or *37* HS2s
🚉HS2 = 1.2 million EVs
/1
For context, 10t CO2 = 1 UK person /year
Also, #HS2 will last much longer than 1.2 million electric vehicles.
Plus there's ecological impacts of lithium mining for EV batteries. Though building rail takes more concrete?Still :#RailNotRoad @Greens4HS2 /2
