1/ #COVID19BC - Vaccines in 5-11 year old - Thoughts

This morning it was announced (by media) that 5-11 yo can now be registered.

A friend asked me if I had a child in that age range, would I be getting them vaccinated?

I said probably, but that isn't good enough...

2/ #COVID19BC - Questions

Before we get into whether it makes sense yet, why do we keep hearing this stuff from anywhere but Public Health?

Another "soft launch" of systems? Like vax bookings, card registration & now this kid vax reg system, @BCGovNews announces after launch.
3/ #COVID19BC - Questions

This may be done intentionally, but why do it on a long weekend, when people aren't available to answer questions about it officially?

Communication from PH has been my biggest issue throughout the entire pandemic & it seems to continue.
4/ #COVID19BC - Is the vaccine safe?

Probably.

This is why we have to wait for @GovCanHealth to make their recommendations.

This jumping the gun isn't how it works.

The data seems like it will be fine, but the risk/benefit in this age group is not the same as adults.
5/ #COVID19BC - Young Adults

Remember when the data came out for the 12-17 age range, there were no safety signals identified until after the fact through surveillance.

Myo/Pericarditis risks were identified after approval and while risk is low, at first we didn't know!
6/ #COVID19BC - Myocarditis Risk

It is very low - ~1/50,000 in one large study with ~95% of cases being mild.

This post market surveillance is important to keep identifying signals & most identified have been mild.

These vaccines are amazing.

7/ #COVID19BC - Why get kids vaccinated?

We know children are at lower risk from getting severe COVID, and that our severe cases numbers, morbidity & mortality have continued to be low, even now 1 month into schools reopening.

With K-12 masking, they have more protection.
8/ #COVID19BC - Current data being reviewed:

"2,268 participants 5 to <12 years of age, the vaccine demonstrated a favorable safety profile and elicited robust neutralizing antibody responses using a two-dose regimen of 10 μg doses"

9/ #COVID19BC - Vaccines in kids are safe.

Don't want people to read this and think I don't trust in safety of vaccination in kids.

I obviously think it'll be approved & that there will be low risk to kids from it, but it isn't approved yet, so for now my answer is probably.
10/ #COVID19BC - How does this fit in overall?

Right now some places in BC are very well protected (>90% 1st dose), we have reproducible data that keeps showing that areas of low community vaccination have higher rates of COVID19 transmission.

Will 5-11 vax make a diff? Dunno.
11/ #COVID19BC - Context

We need to continue focusing on getting older ppl (who are more likely to fall unwell) fully vaccinated.

Vaxxed 5-11 year olds (and eventually under 5) will likely help, but at a community level that there are still lots of vulnerable ppl out there.
12/ #COVID19BC - Going forward

Households will need to look at their own community rates, personal risk, comfort level and think what will the vaccine allow them to do now that they aren't doing.

As always, education is paramount as we help parents navigate these decisions.
13/ #COVID19BC - Final Thoughts

If I had kids in that range, I likely would register them right now in anticipation of approval from @GovCanHealth.

Still would be cautious with indoor large personal/family gatherings w/ unvax ppl there - still highest risk of transmission.

1/ Vaccines in Canada:

We all heard that #AstraZenecaVaccine was approved for use in Canada on Friday.

We now have 3 #COVID19 vaccines, but with that there are discussions re: "Which one is the best vaccine for me?"

Docs say "the best vaccine, is the one in your arm".

Why?
2/ Some thoughts:

But AstraZeneca is only ~62% effective against COVID? That's not good enough, right?

We need to examine & reflect on where we were, and where we are going.

March 11, 2020 - @WHO declares global pandemic.

Within 1 year, we have 3 vaccines (in Canada).

WOW!
3/

1 year ago, we would NOT have thought we would be in this place now.

It's a testament to a concerted global commitment to scientific excellence, that we have these available to us now.

It has definitely been a struggle, but we are making tremendous progress.
