1/7 A corporation is a money-making machine. Until recently in history, corporations could only make money by manipulating matter (wood, stone, metals, minerals, etc) to extract profits. Now corporations can make money by manipulating human perceptions, feelings, and decisions.
2/7 Testifying to Congress, Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistle blower, charges that Facebook puts "astronomical profits before people... Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division, and weaken our democracy...destabilize democracy.” What!?
3/7 If true, think of how frightening and historically unprecedented this is. If a corporation possesses enough power to “destabilize democracy” for its own financial profits, that corporation possesses power equal to that of sovereign nations.
4/7 As a FB insider, Haugen said, “I saw Facebook repeatedly encounter conflicts between its own profits & our safety. Facebook consistently resolve these conflicts in favor of its own profits. The result has been more division, more harm, more lies, more threats, & more combat."
5/7 Bottom line: Facebook makes money from algorithms that stoke ideological division and hate, knowing it will make less money if it changes those algorithms, so it will not do so unless forced by law, like a kleptomaniac won't stop stealing unless the law stops him.
6/7 Social media has created a new world in which immense power, once only wielded by nations, resides in the hands of a few computer nerds like Zuckerberg. We find ourselves living in a massive money-making manipulation-matrix that threatens to “destabilize democracy” itself.
