It could be as old as 6th century. In 1975 there was an effort to build a Mandapam over the shrine. At the same time, the then CM wanted to install the statue of Rajaraja Chola inside. But the archeological department refused to this saying additional structures are not allowed

The peeved CM questioned why a Mandapam for Varahi was allowed then. So the central govt ordered for demolition of the Mandapam. On the very same day of the demolition, the state government was dismissed. Following this, emergency was imposed. In the next election even the party
