The world-over, people are educated, professional without speaking or writing in English. They are lawyers, accountants, doctors, work in MNC companies—no English.
Yes, India is not Japan. Nor will it become Japan till we are freed from English slavery.
What if you were asked to spell something in Chinese, that you didn't know.
But the State and Society had made it a status symbol to know Chinese, so you know a few characters. And then you're put in front of the camera to write in Chinese. You struggle.
I have a question for "English-medium" advocates. When Chinese becomes a global language are you going to campaign for schools in India to become Chinese-medium? Or would it be better to *learn* Chinese without switching the medium to Chinese. Think, then apply that to English.
Switching the medium to Chinese means that children who don't even know Chinese will be forced to learn, math, science, history, geography *in* Chinese. How much will they comprehend?
English is phonetic?😆 Not only it its spelling absurd and non-phonetic, even its alphabet has "names" of letters which are different from the sounds. So sounds have to be taught differently from names. There's not much logic involved. Just rote learning.
Umm, how does needing a link language discount the fact that one can create and run major multinational companies without knowing English, like the Japanese do?
Let's be clear English is not a "global requirement." Then we can discuss policy for India.
You said it. Even after 70 years of pushing English we do not have good English teachers, let alone general English proficiency. Time to create practical language policy driven by scientific understanding that learning happens best in mother tongue.
I'm always amazed at the level of technical proficiency of major government sites in India. This is just using the main "search" box on the Census site.
Bad UI, errors in routine work. India's "English Advantage" in IT gives dividends everywhere.
Meanwhile Chinese programmers, learning in Chinese medium, are hacking into the US government sites, exceeding the US in AI patents.
I doubt the Indian govt even has a way to figure out all its sites that are hacked, let alone hack into others. 😏
Yup, and our assorted "socialists" and communists want the government to keep running airlines and businesses, when they are clearly completely incompetent at even running a website.
Please read my article and then ask yourself why you posit that “Indians are corrupt.”
E.g. if the same question was asked in a Western research context it would be posited as “human beings are corrupt” or “are humans moral”? What is your “other” for Indians? The West? Think.
I learnt to program on a DEC-20 using COBOL😆 in 10th. No PCs then. I wanted to do Computer Science, didn't care about IITs. Only started IIT prep in 11th, from used notes borrowed from a cousin. Luckily got CS at IIT, never thought I would. 😌
Yeah. I think I also only learnt about IITs in 11th grade (which was actually DAV college) because some of my fellow students were prepping for it. Took a while to get clued in, probably started prep close to the end of 11th.
Funny story. After I got IIT admission, but before actually joining, I taught programming in the summer at DAV college. I was 17. A lot of doctors etc were my students, I was the youngest in the class. 😀
But I convinced the DAV principal that I could teach it ha. Got paid too.
If there is an “alarm” it is due to their guilt and fear of karma catching up. Due to their sanguinary blood-thirsty genocide and ethnic cleansing of non-Muslims over decades.
