Hello again, #MCGConf2021CP! (If you didn’t join me earlier for Data Driven Support of Change Management, you should go check that out; my gif game was on point.) Let's take a closer look at one my favorite #CBAM diagnostic dimensions: Innovation Configuration Maps.
An Innovation Configuration Map (IC Map) is one of three diagnostic dimensions in the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (#CBAM), the framework I’m currently using to measure the implementation of @MCG_AUG’s new three-year curriculum. bit.ly/CBAMbook #MCGConf2021CP
An IC Map is ideally developed by the product owner or key stakeholders. Or, in the case of a complex innovation and/or rapid development, it can be constructed through observations of meetings, interviews, and document analysis by a tenacious researcher. #MCGConf2021CP
During longer implementations, an IC Map should be revalidated (annually for us) because priorities & our understanding of an innovation can change and measuring with an outdated tool isn’t very helpful. Revalidation also allows for adaptation to system effects. #MCGConf2021CP
An IC Map illustrates what success should look like at full implementation (which may take some time). Without this shared vision, users may perceive intended objectives and implement features of the innovation in diverse and unexpected ways. #MCGConf2021CP
An IC Map also defines measurable objectives to assess on a scale from ideal implementation (a) to not ideal (d), with optional not implemented/status quo (e) and obstructionist (f) points. Here’s one of the components in our current IC Map. #MCGConf2021CP
An IC Map contains innovation *components*. For each component, there are *dimensions* (in parentheses). Possible configurations of the dimensions, *variations*, are presented on a scale (a-f). Complex innovations (e.g., new curricula) can be grouped in *clusters*. #MCGConf2021CP
In an IC Map, *implementation requirements* document institutional support & resources. All implementation requirements are assumed necessary to achieve ideal (a) implementation of a component. Implementation reqs are defined for clusters (when applicable). #MCGConf2021CP
The resulting IC Map presents a range of innovation components and their implementation possibilities, from ideal outcomes to obstructionist behaviors, that can be referenced throughout and at the completion of the process. #MCGConf2021CP
The development of our IC Map required a flexible, iterative approach, as does the annual validation process. However, a complete 27-page IC Map was developed & then validated twice with stakeholders. The first year of the curriculum was measured using the IC Map. #MCGConf2021CP
TL;DR: IC Maps are great for both communicating the vision for an innovation and measuring the implementation process. And when measurement data is reported to stakeholders during the process, additional support & resources can be directed to impeded components. #MCGConf2021CP
And I’m out! But I’ll drop back in for questions, comments, and thinly veiled criticisms. #MCGConf2021CP

Welcome! Join me for a journey into the choppy waters of data driven change management in health professions education. But buckle up! Institutional change is messy and hard to measure. We're in for a wild ride. #MCGConf2021CP
The commonality of innovations in #MedEd is change management (CM). CM is complex & multifactorial; it's a process rather than an event. CM can either ensure success or prevent adoption. So integrated evaluation & support is critical to implementing any innovation. #MCGConf2021CP
At @MCG_AUG, I’ve embedded collection & reporting of change management data into the implementation of our new 3yr curriculum. I used a framework developed by our keynote speaker, Gene Hall. Drs. Hall & Hord wrote the book on ed change: bit.ly/CBAMbook #MCGConf2021CP
