Today’s House Rules committee met to further proceed on the recommendation of the @January6thCmte to refer Steve Bannon for criminal contempt of Congress. @BennieGThompson and @RepLizCheney both testified about democracy and accountability. But then🧵👇🏻

Sheriff shoot-n-holler and the Animated Sugar Daddy both came in to testify. That’s the unjacketed Jim Jordan and Ice cream enthusiast Matt Gaetz respectively. It was wild, you should really watch the whole thing. But what caught my ear was Gaetz using Steve Bannon’s words.

Gaetz said to ‘catch the signal, and not the noise.’ Ok, then. What did Gaetz and Jordan ‘signal’ today? Well, Jordan argued that the 600 people being prosecuted for the Jan 6 Insurrection are being investigated by the executive branch. That’s where investigations should be.

The implication too is that is where it should end. He literally just threw the trump voters under the bus. He’s signaling the DOJ has everyone involved, look no further. Certainly don’t look at me. Congress has no right to do investigations.

Benghazi Jim Jordan may wish to have a word with January 6th Jim Jordan.

Jordan also ‘signaled’ that he spoke with trump *during* the Insurrection. Remember when Jordan was asked if he had spoken to trump and said uh, well, uh, hummuna, hummuna, I speak with him all the time, I don’t remember.

Chairman of the House Rules committee McGovern deftly asked Jordan if he had spoken with trump before, during or after the insurrection. Jordan then said he spoke with him while we were in the safe room.

Now, the reason Jordan was in the safe room was what? THE INSURRECTION!

McGovern also brilliantly set the stage for what is to come. McGovern asked Jordan and Gaetz if *they* would answer questions of the @January6thCmte. Jordan replied I have nothing to hide. We’ll see.

The ‘signal’, that McGovern sent resonated loud and clear. The @January6thCmte *will* be requesting information from Members of Congress. This ‘signal’ is further amplified by the mere presence of Jordan and Gaetz in the House Rules meeting. They aren’t House Rules members.

They are what you might call, getting ahead of the news cycle. Gaetz went as far as to throw Kevin McCarthy under the bus. Gaetz used his name more than once when talking about information requests. Jordan referenced ‘big tech’ & ‘carriers’ because they complied with subpoenas.

Another ‘signal’ from Gaetz is his ardent defense of McCarthy saying the @January6thCmte is only looking to criminalize the process and set up criminal cases against political opponents. Now, why would he be so worried about criminal prosecutions of Members of Congress?

If we’re looking for ‘signals’ and not noise, then the signals are signaling more subpoenas to come, Jordan’s name may be included, Gaetz name may be included, Kevin McCarthy’s name may be included. Further criminal prosecutions may occur. @January6thCmte is on track.
