• Making 🧪 science videos in Kannada

Total seven winners. Profiles below 👇
1/ I and @sia_steel started giving a no-strings-attached grant of Rs 50k to ambitious people under 25 for whom this money can change their life.

We started 3 months back and so far, we've awarded this to 18 people.

If you're young, please apply here: invertedpassion.com/escape-velocit…
2/ Winners for this month:

He's passionate about physics and writes a publication about tech and its role in the future of human civilization: semisentient.medium.com
3/ 🥇 Smriti Prabhu is a national-level rifle shooter.

Her only goal is to win a gold medal for India in Olympics and become the first woman to do so.

This grant will help her upgrade her rifle so she has a better shot at her goal.
4/ 🧾 Sowyma is due for her final CA exams but due to covid-related financial stress has to take up a full-time job.

This grant (which is sponsored by @augfrank) will help her take a part-time job instead and focus on studies to finish her CA with top grades.
5/ 🧪 Shriya Shankar makes free maths educational content in Kanada.

It's unique because it reaches an audience that's not comfortable with English:

This grant (sponsored by an anonymous person) will help create such local language videos on science.

With this grant (sponsored by an anonymous person), she will be able to pay fee for a masters course in environment conservation.

8/ That's it for this month. (I wrote 7 winners in the first tweet, but it's 6 winners).

We are not able to award a grant to all deserving applications. We still have ~35 unfunded high-quality shortlists.

If you want to sponsor a Rs 50k grant (now or in the future), DM me.

People evaluate emotionally and then rationalize their decision.

2/ Many evolutionary psychologists believe that reason evolved to justify our actions to strangers.

This justification was necessary because strangers couldn’t take one another’s claims at face value.

A story of our home in the universe.

a visual🧵
1/ We belong to a system of planets revolving around a beautiful star.
2/ Just at the edges of the solar system lies remnants from the early days that couldn’t assemble into a planet.

This disc is called the Kuiper belt.

What happened during the first three minutes of the Big Bang?

A 🧵 thread with my notes from the #book
1/ It’s mind-blowing that we humans are able to talk about what happened in the first 3 minutes of The Big Bang.

This book was written in 1976 which was quite a while back but while there have been extensions in the ideas presented, I’m not aware of any idea being rejected yet,
2/ This should perhaps be unsurprising because most scientific ideas that are accepted as truth are consilient, i.e. they’re supported by multiple lines of evidence.

Why we haven’t seen 🛸 aliens visiting us so far.

(a short thread)
1/ Been thinking about this question lately and it seems broadly there are four possibilities:

1. Interstellar travel at high speeds is much, much harder than we expect

2. Aliens aren’t interested in seeding the universe due to ethical concerns
2/

3. Universe is so big that light comes rarely intersect and self-replicating technology is much, much harder than we imagined

4. Intelligence capable of space exploration was an accident and we’re alone

Let’s explore all four possibilities.

All new products compete with Instagram for attention.

(a short 🧵)
1/ You get pitched by other companies all the time.

It’s estimated that we get to see thousands of ads every day. How many marketing messages from yesterday can you recall?
2/ If you’re like most people, it’ll be difficult for you to recall even a single message.

At best, if you stress hard, you’d be able to recall only a few ones.

I measured the speed of light using chocolate!
1/ It’s pretty simple and you can do at home.

All you need is a microwave and, well, chocolate (a large bar).

Here’s how it works.
2/ Microwave creates standing wave inside the chamber.

That’s how your food heats up.

The microwave radiation inside the oven has points of electromagnetic radiation that oscillate the most. Those are called anti nodes.

The ones that don’t oscillate (in red) are called nodes.
