We can’t stop looking at the chimney on this beautiful building, which also has a very interesting #HouseHistory. 🏠@NTWales Ty-mawr, Wybrnant in Conwy was the birthplace, in 1545, of Bishop Morgan, the translator of the first complete Welsh Bible, published in 1588. 1/3⤵️
Ty-mawr originated as a late-medieval hall-house and tree-ring dating of the roof has shown that it was improved during the life-time of Bishop Morgan using timber felled in Spring 1559 and Winter 1564/5. 🏠2/3⤵️
3/3 The house was restored and modified in 1888 and 1987-8. 🏠Lots more info and images available here ▶️coflein.gov.uk/en/site/16966/

For almost 300 years, south Wales has been the focal point of the British tinplate industry, with the Pontypool rolling mill an innovative catalyst for tinplate manufacture. Founded in 1874 near Cwmbrân was Tynewydd tinplate works. @RC_Archives #TinplateTuesday 1/4
Founded in 1874 next to Pontnewydd railway station by Batchelor and Co (or Charles Roberts) Tynewydd passed through a number of owners before becoming part of the Redbrook Tinplate Co. of Monmouth. 2/4 coflein.gov.uk/en/site/415481…
Later becoming part of Linpac, the tinplate works closed c.1961 but its subsidiary stamping factory – Pontnewydd Tin Stamping Co. – seems to have carried on until c.1966. The site has been cleared and has been re-used for light industry. 3/4

The exciting Neolithic discoveries in the Preseli hills of Pembrokeshire and the #stonehengelostcircle have recently made the news. Let us look at another intriguing monument contemporary with this landscape of tombs, stone circles and quarries, the Banc Du enclosure. 1/6⤵️ ImageImageImageImage
2/6 The Banc Du Neolithic enclosure occupies the summit of a low hill at the western end of the Preseli Ridge. It was discovered from the air by @RC_Survey and surveyed by us in 2005. It has the title of being the first dated Neolithic enclosure in Wales.⤵️ Image
3/6 The #earthwork remains are slight and comprise an inner and outer enclosure defined by low banks and shallow ditches built in sections with gaps between. This form of monument is often termed a Causewayed Enclosure.⤵️ ImageImage

1/10 Discovery! Abermagwr Roman villa, Ceredigion. Ten years ago this month, initial excavations directed by Dr Jeffrey Davies and Dr Toby Driver confirmed the existence of Ceredigion’s first (and still only) recorded Roman villa, and the most remote villa in Wales.
2/10 Roman villas are not common in Wales; fewer than 40 known or possible villas are recorded, and these are mostly in the south and east of the country. Abermagwr Villa was discovered as a striking cropmark during aerial photography in the exceptional drought of 2006.
3/10 In 2010 funding was obtained for an exploratory excavation in 2010 by Dr Toby Driver and Dr Jeffrey Davies, with loans of equipment from the Dyfed Archaeological Trust. This confirmed what was – and remains – the only recorded Roman villa in Ceredigion (Cardiganshire).
