The UN is definitely failing again in the ways you describe. It seems to be doubling down on its false facts as we tweet.

But the difference is COVID & Climate. Two huge crises which will not wait for human stupidity to resolve itself.

@GetachewTamiru5 The UN as it is now is not equipped to really deal with either. For the most part it is a multi-disciplinary humanitarian aid, governance consultancy, and development delivery organization with some political/legal arms.

@GetachewTamiru5 It has no effective Governance or Accountability mechanisms. And in media terms outside of the places where it is working is politically and news media wise invisible.

@GetachewTamiru5 And it is donor controlled, I.E. Europe and the UK, & the US. China and Russia have little to no say in organisational strategy, management or operations from what I can see. And nor does New York. Instead you have a large semi-autonomous organisations in loose alignment.

@GetachewTamiru5 It is failing in its current mission and will fail in the much greater mission that lies ahead without root and branch reform and massive expansion.

@GetachewTamiru5 While nobody wants global Government, especially not some which is completely unaccountable, the world now needs global cooperation on a scale never seen before. Multiple institutions need to rewrite their rule books, e.g. the WTO, for us to begin to manage carbon issues.

@GetachewTamiru5 And while no doubt Brussels, Washington, Paris, London, Beijing, Moscow and Delhi have inflated view of the own diplomatic and administrative prowess, diplomatic deliberation is not fast enough to even deal with Covid let alone Climate adaptation and mitigation.

@GetachewTamiru5 But the real Achilles heel is the UNGA, which is the heart of what the UN ought to be, but which in practice is little more than a talk shop and a members organisation for a collective safety net on security/disaster issues.

@GetachewTamiru5 For it to actually work in any meaningful way to direct, govern and drive the transition all national Govts will need something that looks like a real seat at the table. To be treated as stakeholders rather than clients.

@GetachewTamiru5 I would love to see a vision for what this might look like.

I imagine an organisation that brings together on a rotational basis the best and the brightest from everywhere in the world to solve our collective problems and implement the solutions globally and nationally.

@GetachewTamiru5 And once everyone is working together rather than competing over crumbs from the tables of the rich west, it seems entirely possible that conflict and security issues might also go away.
