Remembering Ned Rorem on his birthday πŸŽ‚
πŸ“· Man Ray, Paris, 1953
"He has the gift for letting poetry sing, and he knows the human voice β€” the warmth and the timbres, and how to bring them out in exactly the right place."
- Joshua Barone Image
Ned Rorem by Horst P. Horst
"There are certain things I can't get the point of. Bagels, for instance. Why do people like them? I can't get the point of Berlioz. I can dislike a composer, while admitting what others see in him or her. But not Berlioz." Image
The Paris Diary of Ned Rorem was published in 1966. His boyfriend at the time, Joe Adamiak, was a graphic artist, & did the layout for the book. And took the cover photo as well, which Rorem calls "pretty good".

Ned Rorem in an incredibly cultured-looking group in the home of the Vicomtesse de Noailles, 1951. "She was a rather gifted writer & a very gifted painter, but like many of the rich undisciplined with pen and paintbrush. She was powerful & famous too, and launched me, sort of." Image
Here's another picture of Ned Rorem from Paris in 1953. Can't find a photo credit, even on the Ned Rorem website - nedrorem.net. I wonder if it might also be by Man Ray. A great shot, in any case.

"I am a composer who also writes, not a writer who also composes."

Happy birthday Jane Holzer! πŸŽ‚
πŸ“· Jack Mitchell, late 1960s
"She is gorgeous in the most outrageous way. Her hair rises up from her head in a huge hairy corona, a huge tan mane around a narrow face & two eyes opened - swock! - like umbrellas."
- Tom Wolfe, "The Girl of the Year" Image
Baby Jane Holzer by Susan Wood, 1965
"Jane Holzer is This Year's Girl, at least, the New Celebrity, none of your old idea of sexpots, prima donnas, romantice tragediennes, she is the girl who knows... The Stones, East End vitality..."

Remembering Lawren Harris on his birthday πŸŽ‚
Hiking shirtless near Mount Temple in the Rockies
"He stopped making scenes of shady lanes & streets with strolling couples, & almost every living thing vanished from his paintings."
- @SteveMartinToGo, The Idea of North Image
"Annie Philbin, the canny director of the Hammer Museum, looked curiously at a small picture over her shoulder & said 'Who's that?' In the moment I realized that I had a secret wish: that Lawren Harris be better known in the United States."

Doris Lessing by Marianne Majerus, 1984
@NPGLondon
"What luxury a cat is, the moments of shocking & startling pleasure in a day, the feel of the beast, the soft sleekness under your palm, ... the grace & charm even in a quite ordinary workaday puss."
What a lovely portrait of Doris Lessing, by Toby Melville.
"She was adept at tracing sly signs of continuity where that particular path through the narrative woods had been overgrown and bypassed time out of mind – not least by Lessing."
