In preparation for a book to honour Picasso's 90th birthday, the great photographer & the great painter spent four days together in Picasso's home & studio. amzn.to/3BeeQZs
Picasso said that Ara Güler reminded him of Paul Cézanne, so he drew this mash-up of the two. The drawing is now in the Ara Güler Museum.
Ara Güler had a life-size print of his Picasso portrait prominently displayed in his Istanbul studio.

- William Baziotes

I love this stove!
Denise Colomb
Picasso à Antibes, 1952 @MAPatrimoine
"He does not converse but talks solo—creatively, decisively, and fascinatingly, with wit, ideas, and odd images, his ever-present Spanish accent seasoning his phrases, which emerge in bursts."
- Janet Flanner
Robert Doisneau's Picasso portrait, from 1952
"Discovery is what he deeply cares for and is what alone fascinates him. He is preëminently a sum of curiosities."
- Jaime Sabartés

Robert Doisneau retouches his famous portrait of Picasso.

My favourite of the shots Gjon Mili took of Picasso drawing with light. Taken at the Madoura Pottery, 1949, for Life magazine.

Pablo Picasso by Willy Ronis
Vallauris, 1950, printed in 1971
This is an isohélie, a posterization effect achieved before Photoshop in the darkroom. "I am by no means fond of laboratory cooking but, from time to time, it is fun to get away from my usual territory."

The right hand of Picasso, 1943
Picasso by Irving Penn, 1957
"When Penn arrived at Picasso’s house in the south of France, the artist pretended not to be home. But after Penn’s assistant climbed over the locked gate, Picasso granted the photographer ten minutes." metmuseum.org/art/collection…

At the Picasso retrospective @MuseumModernArt
This was apparently how one looked at Picasso in 1957, at least after a couple of drinks.
What an idea to paint an apple
says Picasso
and Picasso eats the apple
and the apple tells him Thanks

Picasso's Eye, 1954
"When he comes into an unfamiliar room, his rapid black-eyed glance seems to register everything in a sudden exclusive exposure, like a photographer’s lens taking a group picture."
- Janet Flanner
Picasso by Herbert List, 1944
Robert Motherwell tells the story of Picasso asking a writer, ‘What is art? Did I ever ask you that before?’, & before he could answer, “as if he were questioning himself, Picasso said, ‘And what is not?’”
Man Ray's photograph of Paul Éluard & Pablo Picasso at the Hotel Vaste Horizon, Mougin, 1937
"With Picasso," said Éluard, "the walls come down."
Pablo Picasso by Yousuf Karsh, 1954
According to Karsh, "He could partially view himself in my large format lens and intuitively moved to complete the composition."
Pablo Picasso & Marc Chagall by Philippe Halsman, 1955
Wonderful!
Pablo Picasso by Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1953
"As a woman friend of his once remarked, 'If he has been in the wrong about something, he always forgives you'."
- Janet Flanner
I love this Roberto Otero photograph of Picasso with Edward Steichen, in the Museo Picasso Málaga.

Happy birthday Jane Holzer! 🎂
📷 Jack Mitchell, late 1960s
"She is gorgeous in the most outrageous way. Her hair rises up from her head in a huge hairy corona, a huge tan mane around a narrow face & two eyes opened - swock! - like umbrellas."
- Tom Wolfe, "The Girl of the Year"
Baby Jane Holzer by Susan Wood, 1965
"Jane Holzer is This Year's Girl, at least, the New Celebrity, none of your old idea of sexpots, prima donnas, romantice tragediennes, she is the girl who knows... The Stones, East End vitality..."
- Tom Wolfe
All eyes are on Warhol Superstar Baby Jane Holzer, named 'The Girl of the Year' by Andy Warhol.
She's at the Peppermint Lounge, where the music is by Herman's Hermits.

Remembering Ned Rorem on his birthday 🎂
📷 Man Ray, Paris, 1953
"He has the gift for letting poetry sing, and he knows the human voice — the warmth and the timbres, and how to bring them out in exactly the right place."
- Joshua Barone
Ned Rorem by Horst P. Horst
"There are certain things I can't get the point of. Bagels, for instance. Why do people like them? I can't get the point of Berlioz. I can dislike a composer, while admitting what others see in him or her. But not Berlioz."
The Paris Diary of Ned Rorem was published in 1966. His boyfriend at the time, Joe Adamiak, was a graphic artist, & did the layout for the book. And took the cover photo as well, which Rorem calls "pretty good". amzn.to/2Tvwu5L
Remembering Lawren Harris on his birthday 🎂
Hiking shirtless near Mount Temple in the Rockies
"He stopped making scenes of shady lanes & streets with strolling couples, & almost every living thing vanished from his paintings."
- @SteveMartinToGo, The Idea of North
"Annie Philbin, the canny director of the Hammer Museum, looked curiously at a small picture over her shoulder & said 'Who's that?' In the moment I realized that I had a secret wish: that Lawren Harris be better known in the United States."
- @SteveMartinToGo

Remembering Johnny Carson on his birthday 🎂
📷 Philippe Halsman, 1966
"Carson hosted with an unusually light touch and an equanimity that stands out in today’s hyperventilating culture."
- Jason @zinoman
Johnny Carson by Philippe Halsman, 1966
"Did you know Richard Nixon is the only president whose formal portrait was painted by a police sketch artist?"
Johnny Carson by Philippe Halsman, 1966
"It was so hot today I saw a pigeon walking in the shadow of Orson Welles."
Remembering Doris Lessing on her birthday 🎂
📷 Roger Mayne, 1959 @NPGLondon
"Doris Lessing is the ideal winner of the Nobel Prize. After all, the prize is about idealism, & was founded in the belief that writers can make the world a better place."
- Tom Payne
Doris Lessing by Marianne Majerus, 1984 @NPGLondon
"What luxury a cat is, the moments of shocking & startling pleasure in a day, the feel of the beast, the soft sleekness under your palm, ... the grace & charm even in a quite ordinary workaday puss."
What a lovely portrait of Doris Lessing, by Toby Melville.
"She was adept at tracing sly signs of continuity where that particular path through the narrative woods had been overgrown and bypassed time out of mind – not least by Lessing."
- Lorna Sage
