💯.
All Australian ‘Defence Policy’ for the last twenty years has been ‘political’ not ‘strategic’.

The wars we fight, and the way we fight them, are geared to winning elections only, not the actual war.
The announcement re the US Subs was likely based on polling:

The French Subs were unpopular but photos of new equipment is great for election campaigns. Solution? Get some ‘new, new subs’ that cost ‘nothing’.

‘Cement’ the Australian ‘MAGA’ vote at the same time.
Bash China✅
Even when ‘bullets were flying’ around Afghanistan, (Crosby-Textor type) polling was running the war.
Because the awarding of Bravery medals ‘polled well’ for the Govt,
lots of medals (some dubious) were awarded.
Even though the evidence suggested that ‘the decapitation strategy’ wouldn’t work ( eg CDF Houston as early as 2006), the technology ‘hits’ on low level Taliban commanders continued right up until 2021.

Why? Because ‘kill TV’ (CCTV of bombs)won votes, even if it didn’t win wars
So cynical is Australian ‘Defence Policy’ that not only do they provide phoney ‘victories and heroes’, when the political winds change they through those same ‘people under a bus’.
The very same people run PR for the Army on the ground, in the dirt and blood etc, in Afghanistan, as run the MINDEFs popularity campaign in Canberra (and the major acquisition program, like Subs and F35).

Whether its war crimes, subs, or alliances, only ‘polling’ matters.
It’s why we will never have ‘war crimes’ trials, even after ‘Brereton’ (as they didn’t in the UK, or US).
They don’t ‘poll well’ with ‘Conservative voters’
They will quietly be shelved, when the time is right.
Somewhere in a basement in Canberra are the results of the polling that predicts tomorrow’s ‘strategic announcements’.
List of talk of ‘Freedom’ and Flg waving’. No substance.

It didn’t work before, and it won’t work next time.
The Department of Defence hasn’t protected Australia since John Howard gutted it of anyone that put service to the nation ahead of service to the Govt.
‘Defending Aust and their Interests’ now means defending the Govt and their friends.
The media, largely, play along.
How were Subs that don’t even appear for 20 years going to defend a huge, largely desert continent, when we don’t even have enough infantry to protect a single city, or jets that could bomb Fiji?
Marketing. That’s how.
Lots of Flag wavering, and pictures of ships. Hands on Hips
This week Peter Dutton derided the Greens Defence policy.

The problem is the LNP ‘Defence Policy’ is a marketing scheme.

They or the US are not ‘General Dynamics’, corrupt as they are, they are Enron.

If they couldn’t beat the Taliban they won’t beat the Chinese.
#truth
However you vote this coming election, and it’s your choice, don’t be fooled into thinking the LNP are ‘strong on Defence’ (the ALP aren’t, either, btw).
The US is a rapidly collapsing Ponzi Scheme of a nation, coming apart at the seams.
Scomo has backed a loser.
For votes.
The US lost in Vietnam.
They lost in Afghanistan.
They simply killed a lot of people and left Iraq, Syria, Libya in chaos.
If they are ever under attack they would look after their politicians and billionaires. Only.

They want us for our compliance. They got that.
A ‘green screen’ picture of ScoMo and Dutton of the bridge of a non-existent submarine surveying the horizon will probably win an election but won’t win a real war.
Dutton tries to laugh at Jordan Steele John’s Defence credentials but I’d back him over Dutton any day.
He is sensible and not beholden to the US.
Past allies of the US include:
‘The (ISAF) Afghan Govt’,
The South Vietnamese Govt’, and
both the Saddam Hussein and Chalabi Govts of Iraq.
None exist anymore.

The story of Colin Powell is unfortunately one of tragedy and failure, not struggle and success.

It’s true he was a senior officer at time when there few black senior officers.

It’s true he become a civilian leader at time there were no black civilian leaders in the US.

But.
When called upon to actually ‘lead’ Powell failed.

More correctly, he showed his true character.
By going to the UN and knowingly making a false case for war, and then afterwards shrugging it off by the simple ‘I follow orders. It’s what I do’ he revealed his true nature, and the reason for his success.

"The biggest source of corruption in Afghanistan", one American official said, "was the United States."

We knew that in 2013

If you read the 2013 story about Afghanistan, it doesn’t take much imagination to think the CIA may do similar things in other countries.
How did the US come to ‘own’ Australia as the result of a few key figures?

Aug 2018: One day James called from Australia. After a few minutes the line went silent. I could tell she was silently crying. There was something called the ‘Father Daughter Dance’ at her school and she had been talking about it all year.
Not having me there had taken on a meaning beyond simply the dance. I knew that if I went home I would get arrested, and as I was facing serious National Security charges I may not be be let out. But I could also tell that she was at breaking point.
There was a chance that if I flew in and out in a matter of hours I may not get caught. Without telling her, I booked a flight to Sydney and left Sarah and Georgie in Spain. I arrived the day of the ball and drove to the school.

The (European) summer of 2018 was moments of fun tinged by sadness. Georgie, Sarah and I looked up old friends in the UK, and clowned around in medieval gear at the Tower of London.

It wasn’t the same without James.
After Sarah returned it was just Georgie and I in the mountains above Marbella. It was at least good to have my youngest to myself for a few months, and I did my best as a single Dad, in a strange place. We had some nice moments, like the peddle a cart races on the beach.
About that time the allegations were published in Australia that a highly decorated SAS soldier was actually a murderer who cynically lied about what actually went on operations, routinely planting weapons on dead civilians, even throwing a person off a cliff in a fit of anger.

It’s funny how the countries who go to war most are ‘democracies’…it’s almost as if ‘going to war’ is a vote winner.🤔

I guess it’s just a coincidence.

They wouldn’t sacrifice the lives of their own soldiers for an election, would they?

That’s impossible, surely?
The great thing about committing your country to war in a democracy is that even if you stuff it all up, and you never could have won, it’s likely going be blamed on the ‘other guys’.
Consider this:

GW Bush: Started two major wars, re-elected with an increased majority.
Obama: lots of ‘war’. Re-elected.

Trump: said he would stop war. Loses.

Biden: Ends war, loses popularity, but wants to start another to make up for it.

Your tax dollars at work!

January 2018: After the excitement of our trip ‘on the run’ in Europe, we all decided it was best that our eldest daughter James went back to boarding school in Australia. If I was going to go to gaol, we would need as much stability as possible, and it would be the safest place. Image
It was the saddest goodbye, as I couldn’t accompany her, as I would likely be arrested on arrival, and I didn’t want her there whe it happened. I was so proud of her putting on a brave face, but I knew it simply wouldn’t ‘work’ for long without her with us.
When we spoke on the phone she kept up the facade, and the extended family were great, but those with children know the ‘missing feeling’ one gets if anyone is left behind. She knew why I had to stay away, but it also hurt.
