I’m building upsells into the engagement process for 1040s this year

Courtesy of @ignitionapp’s multiple option proposals

What are your favorite 1040 upsells? Some I’ve seen in the wild 👇
Audit protection

Basically a credit for the first $X in professional fees handling notices or audits that stem from the tax filing
Transcript matching

Pull IRS and state records to ensure payments match

And IRS transcripts don’t contain any surprises

I planned to start this for all, then realized it ought to be a step up in service level
Next Year Projection

At the time of filing update next years estimates for what you know now

This happens a lot now but we don’t capture it as an additional value add
Intake meeting

In person or Zoom meeting when receiving the info
Personalized delivery

A video at the time of delivery walking through the return

Part of this exercise is to determine what the *minimum level of service we’ll provide is, and this one’s right on the fence
Year end planning

Probably doesn’t make sense to include in the initial intake process, since the value will be delivered 6-10 mos later

What else? 🤔

In an effort to help my Jr preparers I'm building a list of bookkeeping items that can be optimized for tax reporting #taxtwitter

Not accounting fixes, just items to optimize for tax savings

Would love to organize some ideas here

Here's 5️⃣ I've got thus far:
1️⃣ Pulling advertising out of donations

If signage was provided, or ads in a publication, pull the expense to advertising

Exception if cost was astronomical relative to spend
2️⃣ 100% deductible meals

-Team events
-Events for the public
-Reimb'd under an accountable plan

Lately I’ve been seeing talk about time vs energy

We’re hyper-mindful of time

But knowledge workers are more often limited by energy

What changes do you make when you optimize for energy, rather than time?
This year I asked each of my team members what aspects of their role give them energy, and what saps their energy

I prioritized hiring a team that draws energy on the tasks that most sap my energy
The result is I’m energized to do what I do each day

I’m in a more positive state of mind

And that enthusiasm is infectious to the people around me

A mistake we all make when getting into video:

You try to be a one-take wonder to save time

It's the slowest, most frustrating approach. A couple examples:

🙆‍♂️🎥
Your 90 second check-in with Frank doesn't *need* to be perfect

But you're going to do things that are irrecoverable

So what do you do? You try to record a 90 second video 10 times
What's worse, you'll start getting into the flow, then blow it at the end

Before you know it you've spent 20 minutes trying to record a 90 second video

There's a less sweaty way

I'm open sourcing the tool I built with Realize to triage ERC & PPP2 advising

I'll run several hundred of my own clients through it in the coming weeks #taxtwitter

🥑It's now free for anyone to use🥑

A thread re: how it works 👇 Image
1/ Full docs for the tool, how it works, and how it handles fringe scenarios can be found here:

tools.rlz.io/erc-ppp2-intake
2/ This is an unopinionated data collection tool

It's hard to give concrete advice right now

That doesn't mean we shouldn't start collecting the data needed to advise once the rules come further into focus

🤖 Email marketing automation for tax planning season

With email marketing tools, though controversial, you can track opens, link clicks, and set conditional follow-ups accordingly

Here's my playbook for the upcoming tax planning season, and a link to the Miro board 👇
It starts with a single email to all of the 1040 clients I billed >$X for their 2019 return

Salutation is personalized by the system + additional text if the following applied in 2019:

-We did TP in prev year
-They owed over $X in tax
-Underpmt penalties
-Late pmt penalties
After the first paragraph, they get a link to one of three different two minute Loom videos

The video they get is dependent upon if:
-They didn't have tax planning last year
-They owed >$X in 2019
-A fallback if the above two don't apply

If you're still considering whether #nocode has relevance to accountants:

Here are 7 tools I've prototyped in the last 3 months while managing a 3,600 client firm through a pandemic

It isn't as hard as you'd think

👇
1/ PPP reporting

We were issuing these reports the week after the PPP began, and have run over 1,000 of them to-date

2/ Client request framework

A platform-agnostic approach to requesting client info at scale
