LATEST ON METRO: #wmata gave update this afternoon, they hope to add five 6-car trains into service late next week; those trains are currently stuck at Shady Grove rail yard due to canopy & other work at the closed Shady Grove & Rockville stations blocking their path south
Metro spokesperson says track work is needed to get the trains safely past the work going on at those two stations. Right now there are 31 trains in service, so five more would help, but would not get things back to normal by any stretch of the imagination. #wmata
In fact, every day this week there have been 31 trains operating. It's becoming increasingly obvious returning older 2000, 3000 & 6000 series trains to service will not happen fast enough to make a quick impact. Only the return of 7000s would make a huge difference. #wmata
Regarding the return of the 7000s - Metro says it's working closely with overseer @MetrorailSafety on a plan that includes how often they need to be inspected. Once the plan is officially submitted to WMSC & approved, #wmata can implement it and start returning 7000 series cars.
Metro promises to have more information on what level rail service will be at in the coming weeks at its board of directors meeting tomorrow. They'll also give the latest on the investigation into the October 12 derailment that led to all this. #wmata

Here is the Metro train that became disabled in the tunnel just short of Gallery Place while heading south. DC Fire says all passengers have been safely evacuated. #wmata
Metro is now doing single tracking on the Green and Yellow lines at Gallery Place, Red Line running as normal, well at least normal for this week. #wmata
Here is a closer look at the Metro train that became disabled in the tunnel just short of the lower Green/Yellow line platform at the Gallery Place-Chinatown station. Firefighters tell me they evacuated about 100 people, everyone is OK. #wmata
BREAKING: NTSB says the Metro train that derailed last week derailed at least three times that same day & was not pulled out of service until the last derailment. It was able to get back on the tracks the first two times. Broken brake parts left behind all 3 times. #wmata
NTSB says the first 2 derailments the train kind of righted itself & got back on the tracks. But the third one started at a switch near the Rosslyn station and the train never righted itself. It grew worse as the train moved on until the train could no longer move easily. #wmata
A defect found in one axle of the Metrorail car that derailed last week was found in other 7000 series cars, so @MetrorailSafety is ordering all 7000 series cars pulled from service before Metro opens tomorrow morning. The 7000 series cars are Metro‘s newest. #wmata
If you ride Metro prepare for a really rough day tomorrow with the 7000 series trains gone. Metro says the 7000 series makes up about 60% of its fleet. #wmata
A Metro board of directors committee approved this today, another vote by the full board is still needed - but comments by the transit police chief made it seem as if MTPD would do very little enforcement at all if and when this goes into effect. (thread) #wmata
He says they wouldn't suspend the person's SmarTrip card & they'd only be charged with trespassing if they committed another crime on Metro property while under a ban. #wmata
Q: “I try to get on a train, what happens if I’m banned?”
MTPD Chief: "Theoretically sir you could get on the train & as long as you didn’t commit a criminal offense that drew your attention to the police then you could get on that train, and we would not be aware of it.” #wmata
On the scene near Giles St in Springfield’s Newington Forest area, where a husband & wife were shot & killed in their front yard this morning.
The new Fairfax County police chief called it a “tragic, brutal, vicious double murder.“
Fairfax Co. Police had been at the same home Monday for many hours after a report of a “dispute“ & burglary. They believe today’s murders were connected to what happened Monday.
Monday’s incident was still under investigation when this morning’s double murder happened.
Police chief: “This was not a random act of violence. Not at all...the shooter or shooters, we strongly believe, are known to a relative of our two victims.“
US attorney’s office announces huge operation in which authorities seized large amounts of drugs, illegally possessed guns, and cash.
The operation involved seven states and the alleged criminals had a large presence in Loudoun County.
The DEA says seven different groups were operating out of the DC region.
Although the drug operation spanned far beyond Loudoun, the county sheriff says in Loudoun alone it was the largest drug seizure in county history.
He says the drugs stemmed from the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico, once led by El Chapo.
