Feeling uninspired?

Not to worry...

Here are 6 tips to help you build — and keep — motivation.

Thread 👇
Motivation is a cruel mistress.

When it’s here, life is good.

When it’s not, you feel like you're hauling a boulder up a mountain.
But the truth is, we don't have to be at its mercy.

We actually have more control over our motivation than you might think.

In this thread we’ll cover:

1 - How to build motivation from the ground up.
2 - How to sustain it over time.

👇
1 - Get crystal clear on the outcome:

Most people start projects without understanding where they're going and why they want to get there.

You may think you have a "goal," but you don't.

Not the kind that drives motivation.
It's not enough to simply articulate the endpoint, you must paint a picture of what life will be like when you arrive.

When you can transport yourself to the very moment you achieve success, your motivation will intensify 10 fold.
Tip: Don't settle here. Work this vision until you feel it in your bones.

For a deeper dive on goals, try this.
2 - Make it exciting:

Excitement is a prerequisite for motivation.

Without it, you won't find much fuel in the tank.

Make sure your goal is ambitious, specific, and connected to your long-term vision for your life.
3 - Believe in your goal:

Don't just have a goal, have an unshakeable belief that you can achieve it.

How?

Make a plan.

A bullet-proof plan breeds belief because it transforms an abstract goal into a tangible reality.
Get serious about your plan.

Be specific about what needs to get done and how.
In short:

1. Have a goal
2. Make it exciting
3. Make it realistic

Okay, so now that we have motivation, how do we keep it around for the long haul?
4 - Stop talking about your goals:

Research shows that when we talk about our goals, we lose motivation.

Sound counterintuitive? Here's what's going on:

Telling someone about our goals gives our brain a pre-mature sense of accomplishment.
“While you feel a sense of pride in letting people know what you intend to do, that pride doesn't motivate you and can in fact hurt you later on.” says NYU professor Peter Gollwitzer.

In other words, you're leaking your motivational juices.

Zip your lips. Stay focused.
5 - Track progress religiously:

To retain motivation, you need to see that your hard work is paying off.

Some goals can be tracked linearly (ie. # of pounds lost) — for those, progress is obvious and easy to identify.
But other goals more closely resemble the growth curve of Chinese bamboo.

In other words, they don't show signs of progress until much further down the road.

For these goals, you need to do something else...
6 - Move the goal post:

Yes, your goal is the final destination.

But if that's your only target, your reward is too far in the future.

This will kill your motivation.
Instead, re-wire what qualifies as a win.

Rather than focusing on the outcome, hone in on your daily execution.

Did you do what you said you were going to do? That's a win, that's progress.

Use these little wins to stoke your motivation and keep that fire burning.
Ultimately, motivation is not necessary for success...

But it sure as hell is a nice resource to have in your corner.

Rather than sitting back & waiting for it to strike, be proactive about managing your motivation —your goals will thank you.
Working alone is hard.

What if you could control your motivation?

Let’s talk about Mimesis.

What is it and how can we leverage it to reach our goals & accelerate our success.

Thread 👇
Memesis is a concept coined by French philosopher René Girard & popularized in the book ‘Wanting’ by Luke Burgis.

In this thread we’ll…

1. Break down the core concepts behind mimesis

2. Explain how it can help us build more lasting motivation
But first, a disclaimer.

This is not a book about how to be more productive.

And I can’t entirely say that the author would agree with the application I’m proposing in this thread.

The Roosevelt Dash

In college, Roosevelt was known to collect hobbies leaving little time for his studies.

To cope, he was forced to work in short, extremely intense bursts of concentration.

In other words, no coffee breaks, no chit chat, & definitely no Twitter.

"When Plan A fails, remember there are 25 more letters" — Chris Guillebeau

As an entrepreneur, failure is part of the game.

We know this by now.

But no matter how many times we hear "fail fast, fail often" or "fail up," the emotional blow still hurts.

Do you have a Procrastination Protocol?

Here are 7 ways to bust the procrastination bubble that having nothing to do with “powering through it.”
A procrastination protocol is a series of pre-defined steps & strategies that you can turn to when facing a period of procrastination.

Here are the tactics I use listed in the order that I deploy them.
1 - Embrace the resistance

When we resist the feeling of resistance —we freeze it in place.

Instead, stop running from your procrastination and just embrace it. You’re procrastinating, so what.

Realize that this is a temporary state and you’ll be back in action in no time.
