1. Have a goal 2. Make it exciting 3. Make it realistic
Okay, so now that we have motivation, how do we keep it around for the long haul?
4 - Stop talking about your goals:
Research shows that when we talk about our goals, we lose motivation.
Sound counterintuitive? Here's what's going on:
Telling someone about our goals gives our brain a pre-mature sense of accomplishment.
“While you feel a sense of pride in letting people know what you intend to do, that pride doesn't motivate you and can in fact hurt you later on.” says NYU professor Peter Gollwitzer.
In other words, you're leaking your motivational juices.
Zip your lips. Stay focused.
5 - Track progress religiously:
To retain motivation, you need to see that your hard work is paying off.
Some goals can be tracked linearly (ie. # of pounds lost) — for those, progress is obvious and easy to identify.
But other goals more closely resemble the growth curve of Chinese bamboo.
In other words, they don't show signs of progress until much further down the road.
