🧵Snr State Dept official, asked about role of Egypt, KSA & UAE on Sudan, said US envoy, State & WH have engaged reps of all those govts. implies there may not be consensus between US & those countries that release of PM Hamdok and his wife to virtual house arrest is not enough.
SSDO: important that the PM was released, but it is not sufficient.. So we continue to engage them on the fact that it's not enough that you would have PM Hamdok back home. …The Sudanese people are not going to stand by idly & watch the military basically obliterate
the civilian institutions of the state, or replace the state institutions with sort of Quisling-type appointments. Because these 3 countries…are very concerned with Sudan stability, & we simply do not see that a continuation of the type of military rule that Gen. Burhan
put in place and has in mind will keep Sudan stable.
He stressed the US is very concerned the military exercise restraint tomorrow. “The Sudanese people are preparing to take the streets tomorrow in protest of the military overthrow & we call on the security forces to refrain from any & all violence against protesters & to fully
respect the citizens right to demonstrate peacefully.”
He mentioned that Sudan has tens of billions of dollars in debt relief which numerous countries and institutions have now suspended negotiations over as being a potentially significant financial pressure on the Generals to allow for restoration of a transitional govt
he said he doesn’t believe Gulf/Egypt can make it up. “&I don't believe that those countries..that might be less concerned about a strongman general taking control than we are, are going to be able to replace that type of support Sudan needs to overcome the legacy” of bashir yrs

Have been listening to @jrezaian’s superb podcast, 544 days. & was thinking about the months in 2015 when the timeline of the sham judicial proceedings seemed related to the timeline of the Iran nuclear talks. “indictment” announced april 2015, “trial” may 26, 2015,…

🧵A senior Israeli official, speaking to reporters on background today, pressed for Iran to face further diplomatic isolation. When asked about Saudi Iran talks, he said he thought Iran should be diplomatically isolated.
Though US and western parties expressing increased frustration with Iran not returning to talks, he suggested it was still too early for in depth US Israeli discussions about possible military action. US still at stage of looking at situation, analyzing it, he said.
He suggested it might be appropriate for the other parties to rebuke Iran at the next IAEA board of governors meeting in November.
