We are in deep, deep unchartered waters but I think we may look back & see this as Facebook's Week Zero.

This week's presentation & rebranding needs to be seen for what it is: a scorched earth policy.

The past does not exist. There is only future
1/
What Facebook has done this week is to defy reality. To defeat it.

The present does not exist. The multiple front page stories from multiple news orgs based on 20k internal docs never happened.

It doesn’t care. Because its plan is to colonise, own & control the future
2/
Facebook’s ambition is imperial.

And we are at the point in the movie where they need a new planet to colonise. It’s not ‘the metaverse’. It’s our AI future.

And this is who is building it. A handful of white tech bros & their dutiful lackeys
3/

This is an extractive industry. And it is us who are being extracted. This future is being built on our digital cells & bones. Yet we have no say in it.

It is not our future. It is theirs.

This world we will all shortly be living in is the Future According to Facebook
4/
This week @FrancesHaugen gave devastating evidence to UK parliament.

And here’s what Facebook did: Zuck gave cosy interviews to his favourite white male American tech journalists. (h/t @karaswisher)

Facebook has given up apologising. This is Blitzkrieg. Total warfare.
5/
Our AI future is coming so much faster than we think. Regulation - too late, too slow, too analogue - can’t save us at this point.

It’s too fast. Too pervasive.

Here’s just one eg: It’s no longer possible to hold free & fair elections. But we can’t even acknowledge this.
6/
Reporting on Facebook has radically shifted in last 5 years. And again since Jan 6.

But it needs to change again. Facebook isn’t an authoritarian state. It’s worse that an authoritarian state. Its plan for our future is totalitarian.
7/
Too much for a Sunday night thread. But with thanks to those who’ve taught us how we need to treat authoritarians @mariaressa @navalny @Tsihanouskaya.

And why we need a different type of journalism @jayrosen_nyu @Sulliview @chrislhayes @mehdirhasan et al 🙏
8/
Gah! Typo! Uncharted territory not unchartered, dammit. Grrr

I wish I could tell you this is ironic. But earlier today, irony passed away after a massive cardiac event from which it did not recover

The whole presentation is worth watching in full for the complete mindfuck experience.

But @nickclegg is always a highlight. Here he is allaying fears that the metaverse might destroy democracy or launch nuclear missiles from your toaster which of course it can’t
‘So basically what you’re saying is that you’re going to be able to send a text message just by thinking about moving your fingers.’

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

Facebook is a malignant global empire destroying democracy.

Given I’m still paying a very very high personal cost for this talk (2+ years of the head-fuck & time-sink that is litigation), I hope you’ll forgive me for posting this again today of all days
Huge kudos to @FrancesHaugen & amazing work by dozens of journalists at 17 news orgs to report out these docs.

And today remember also the many many victims of Facebook, one of which is us, the British people. We still have *no idea* of what happened on its platform in EUref
Facebook is a black hole. It swallows the past. It’s a crime scene. And it refuses time & again to hand over the evidence.

What happened in Myanmar was an abomination. Yet *even last week* it was fighting legal attempts to uncover the truth

Today @FrancesHaugen will testify to parliament. Here’s why it matters.

From a @nytimes report yesterday:

According to secret internal Facebook docs, it spends 87% of misinformation budget fighting on US content.

And 13% on the *rest of the world*

We do not matter to Facebook
There’s a lot going on today. This is a different committee to the one that called Zuckerberg to testify. But it’s the same chair: @DamianCollins.

Zuck’s refusal to come to UK or give evidence to grand international committee is the backdrop to today

And the dam has burst. The embargo has lifted & 17 news organisations are dropping their Facebook scoops into news cycle already flooded with Facebook scoops.

Here for starters is @cnn

Whistleblowers need all the support they can get. In the UK, we saw @shahmirUK being outed & destroyed. @chrisinsilico put himself into prolonged legal & personal jeopardy. It is HARD. It is dangerous. And I am grateful & relieved that @FrancesHaugen has the support she needs.
I've been in awe of how impactful the roll-out of @franceshaugen whistleblowing has been & hope it encourages others to follow in her footsteps.

Oops. @llaurieclarke, that’s unfortunate. A crashing mistake in your very first paragraph. @IndependentSage didn’t organise that summit. 😱 Oh & they’ve never been called ‘iSAGE’. 😱😱 And the letter you refer to wasn’t them either 😱😱😱
This ain’t right either. ‘Activist’, sigh, Cambridge Analytica didn’t ‘break’ in 2016 & I’d love to hear more about this ‘troll army’ 🧐 Oh, & I don’t do ‘media support’ for the group that most definitely isn’t ‘iSAGE’ but if you’d answered my message you could have asked me that
Hello @bmj_latest. You literally footnote the paper yet failed to spot that the lead author *has nothing to do* with Independent SAGE. And that’s literally the opening to your article about how wrong they’ve been 😂

Oops.

The entire system of science-based policy making in Britain is broken.

And to everyone who’s ever knocked @IndependentSage, allow me to point out that they’ve met twice weekly throughout the pandemic & put their advice directly into the public domain

inews.co.uk/news/politics/…
The country is still a total Covid disaster. They’re still meeting twice a week. And honestly we need them now more than ever.

gofundme.com/f/indepdent-sa…
My personal belief is that SAGE, @independentSAGE, the Royal Colleges & above all @uksciencechief & @CMO_England need to hold own summit & inquiry.

The entire UK science establishment has failed. And they need to own that in order to have any chance of moving beyond it
