Part 3 in my series on evangelical child abuse is going to be about breaking the cycle. The hard work people have done to deconstruct. To parent differently - their children, and themselves. It will be hard to write, but I hope meaningful.
I have been moved beyond measure by the responses to my reporting. There is so much pain. And to be seen and recognized - to be told they deserved better - holds meaning. Part 1 of the series, which offers historical and doctrinal background, is here: theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
Part 2, which examines the long term effects of God-endorsed child abuse on romantic relationships and sexualities, is here: theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
As a woman it is rarely permitted to be proud of yourself in public. But I am proud of the work I've done. Not just seeking out pain, but shaping it into stories. That's what this profession is, at its best. If you want to support this work, subscribe: theswordandthesandwich.substack.com

I am enjoying having a GOOD knee brace (I measured my knee), being happy with my little 14 minute mile, the feeling of warming up, the cool wind and the sunshine. I like that it makes me feel good!

i havent slept much in the past 24 hours, so if im a little self indulgent forgive me. it's just, i know i could make a whole lot more money & clout engaging in flippant bigotry, cruelty, or fearmongering. i know i could get big punching down.
today i chose not to. i chose to tell stories that haven't been, but need to be told. i have not seen another piece that addresses evangelical child abuse as a whole. nor such testimonies. so take a minute to read it, if you feel able. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…

what a weird day to release one of the most meaningful pieces ive ever worked on in my life
Anyway, it's here. This is part 2 of my series on evangelical corporal punishment. This piece examines the impacts of beatings on adult romantic relationships and sexualities. It is a complex subject, and I did my best to treat it with due care. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
I am immensely grateful to the many people who shared their childhood experiences with me. I've consumed ~15 books for this series thus far, and far more testimonies from those whose lives were shaped by these doctrines. Irrevocably, and with great harm. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…

to honor my fascination with nicolas cage and also halloween, im watching The Vampire's Kiss, an absolutely bananas movie whose bananasness is dictated by cage's extremely deliberate and baffling choices as an actor
writhing while screaming the alphabet
cage's affectation in this film is incredible.
