1/ Yes, the Paterson fiasco confirms the threat Boris Johnson poses to British democracy, but the article does not go deep enough. Johnson is merely the symptom of social and economic changes that have fundamentally transformed our politics.
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
2/ I wrote this article explaining how deindustrialisation and other economic changes have shattered the working & middle classes as coherent political forces, thus enabling the Tory elite and their super-rich patrons to rule over a fragmented electorate.
sussexbylines.co.uk/un-divide-to-c…
3/ The dramatic economic and social changes wrought by deindustrialisation make it far easier for corrupt, negligent and anti-democratic populist politicians to rise to power within the Tory party and the nation. Johnson is just a symptom of a much deeper rooted malaise.
4/ In the medium to long term new sociopolitical movements may arise which will form bulwarks against corrupt populism, but for the time being we need a socially and politically fragmented opposition to work together in a Democratic Alliance to defend democracy. #FBPA
5/ Climate change does not determine each day's weather, but it makes certain kinds of weather more likely. Fundamental economic change like deindustrialisation bears a similar relation to everyday politics. Deindustrialisation makes Johnsons and Trumps more likely.

A move to rejoin is a long way off. But if Starmer rules it out then he can fuck off. We are the majority and we've had five years of patronising insults from the Labour leadership.

A Progressive Alliance is necessary, but we can and should back pro-EU parties within an alliance
There is no evidence that Labour would suffer from being critical of Brexit, because it never has been critical of Brexit as such.

And Labour's Brexit stance makes it look patronising, insincere, weak and manipulative - hardly a recommendation to the electorate.
What I suspect many people want of government is not merely policies, but a sense of clear and definite leadership, clear principles and the courage to stand up to difficult challenges. A party leadership that looks driven by focus groups and private polling is hardly that.

1/ Keir Starmer says there will be “no rejoining” of the EU under Labour and says he wants to “make Brexit work.”

Labour - 5 years of collaboration in the worst right-wing crime against the British people and democracy in living memory.
2/ I support a Progressive Alliance. But within that alliance we can join, support and campaign for the pro-EU parties. And the lower Labour falls in the polls the more it will be pushed towards accepting a Progressive Alliance and supporting PR.
3/ The idea that Labour would be harmed by criticising Brexit is a myth based on zero empirical evidence. Labour has never criticised Brexit, and the facts show that that failure culminatted in catastrophic electoral defeat.

To understand Brexit it's very useful to know about James Buchanan, an immensely influential market fundamentalist economist who believed democracies were parasites and advocated stealth attacks against them. His ideas inspired the mega-rich Kochs.

Here's another article on James Buchanan and the Kochs - 'The Ideologues Who Want to Destroy Democracy to Save Capitalism'.

By way of an aside, billionaire Peter Thiel who now has access to our NHS data believes capitalist democracy is an oxymoron.

In 2018 Liz Truss slammed regulations in a speech to the Koch funded Cato Institute, a US market fundamentalist think-tank backing, among other things, an environmental roll-back after Brexit. The Cato Institute was founded as the Charles Koch Foundation.

1/ Paul Dacre promoted fascist hate, lies, xenophobia, scapegoating of minorities, anti-intellectualism and the fascist "Will of the People".

The Tories are desperate to have him as head of Ofcom. They are not just a kleptocratic party, they are a kleptofascist party. ImageImageImageImage
2/ Here is Prof Timothy Snyder explaining how right-wing parties are using Nazi propaganda techniques to divide us into friends and enemies. Dacre's rhetoric of the "Will of the People" and division of the people into decent middle England & the chattering classes did just that
3/ Dacre's "Will of the People" rhetoric echoed that of Goebbels after a Nazi referendum victory. In both cases it was intended to divide the people into "The People" and their enemies and delegitimise the core democratic right to oppose. ImageImageImage

Since 2017 a majority of the British electorate has opposed Brexit, while the two main parties, fixed in place by FPTP have supported it. This is a catastrophic failure of British democracy. Labour in particular has failed, and FPTP has become a noose around democracy's neck.
FPTP made some sense while class was the primary axis of political division - two parties representing the two sides of the class division. But deindustrialisation has ended class politics, and FPTP has become a destructive relic of a bygone era.
What has replaced class politics is a fragmented electorate in which a large, mostly poorly educated, part of the electorate disorientated by economic and social change are clinging to the fake promise of safety and solidarity offered by tribal nationalism

Owen Paterson faces suspension for breaking lobbying rules.

Here's an earlier article on Paterson

Randox which employs Paterson as a paid consultant has been awarded a £133m contract without any other firms being given the opportunity to bid for the work theguardian.com/world/2020/may…
2019 - Former cabinet minister and climate-change denier Owen Paterson is closing down his private thinktank, from which he received nearly £39,000 from unknown donors to fund overseas trips.

The stench of what ordinary folk would call corruption. theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
