Since being elected @DeanPreston “has opposed development plans and legislative proposals that could have yielded enough units to house more than 28,000 people — including enough affordable housing for nearly 8,500 people. “ sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/hea…
“That total includes his opposition to a state law that could have potentially added homes for almost 20,000 people in his district.”
when we slow roll/block housing (esp projects with a big affordable allotment) in search of some perfect lefty unicorn, it doesn’t just impact a district, or a city. SF not building housing is instrumental in the runaway price increases in the East Bay.
And while the “more dogs than kids” trope about SF ignores the city’s historic toll as gay sanctuary, a city where no families except the very rich or those with property for decades can live—its a big problem!
Role
If you make a deal to have a 100% affordable project in your district by absorbing the affordable requirement from other projects in other districts…it doesn’t help the city-wide need for more affordable units. It’s three card Monty.
Too many California politicians have their eye firmly on whatever housing message keeps their base happy. What we need are more holistic solutions. And a ton more units of all descriptions, near transit and density
If SF blocks housing, not only do we see more in houses and more families leave. Oakland gets gentrified. More people move into the wild/urban interface. Then we have Paradise. And more unhorsed people.

1/ I'm one of several journalists who've been sued regarding tweets around the Covington Catholic/DC mall incident. But this is about more than me, or this lawsuit. It's about a new ideological war on journalism: motherjones.com/media/2021/11/…
2/ I/we don't even know who we're being sued *by*. We have a sense, though, based on who the plaintiff's lawyer is: motherjones.com/media/2021/11/…
3/ This kind of lawsuit is becoming increasingly common, a way to quash reporting, any cripple institutions the plaintiffs and this new class of lawyers see as ideologically opposed to their worldview:
Ok I am trying to rewatch The Departed, ostensibly to disabuse myself of the notion that this movie is extremely overrated. 2 min in and Gimme Shelter is underscoring Nicholson chewing scenery idk folks
It’s like Goodfellas’ Bildungsroman, but nowhere near as good!
So many great (or reputed to be great) actors, not exactly that the dialogue is bad, it’s just…tryhard? And also leans way the fuck into the racism in a way that feels pro forma
I don't know anything about running a university, or architecture, but I do know you this is an incredibly bad philanthropic precedent that you should never agree to for any amount of money. independent.com/2021/10/28/arc…
Yeah...two doors for 4,500 people, in an area rocked by fires and earthquakes. Seems smart!
“You talk to older people and they’re like, ‘Dude we sell tomato sauce, we don’t sell politics. Then you have younger people being like, ‘These are political tomatoes. This is political tomato sauce.’” nytimes.com/2021/10/28/bus…
The thing about generational mores and power struggles is everybody, should they live long enough, gets to experience both sides. The Boomers made "never trust anyone over 30" famous. And loved astrology. And tuned in and dropped out and protested and hitchhiked and...
Gen X mocked and confronted our elders too, we just never had any broad cultural power. So wryly watching Gen Z and millennials fight for dominance is perfect for us.
If you won't vote for a development with 1/4th of units set aside for affordable housing to be built on a parking lot near transit, just stop claiming you're for more density.
