In 1963, when 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬 thought free-radical damage to DNA caused aging, Smith et al. were studying wasp aging 🐝 Their unexpected results made them ask “if DNA mutation does not explain aging, what other mechanism could be involved?” Cue da epigenome… journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108…
So fun to read these old papers. Scientists were so advanced, even though they couldn’t yet read the genome or the epigenome
The genius was to hit with X rays wasps that carried 1x or 2X copies of the genome. Those with extra DNA had the same lifespan unless irradiated. The 1X DNA wasps lived shorter, presumably due to their lack of a backup copy. Conclusion: normal aging isn’t due to mutations! Genius

One-third of Americans don’t know they are suffering from sky-high uric acid levels, putting them at risk for many age-related diseases. New study 🐀 shows resveratrol pulls uric acid out of the bloodstream & reduces risk tinyurl.com/pux4w386
David Perlmutter will release a his book in Feb called Drop Acid. Was lucky to see an advanced copy…@DavidPerlmutter
You can lower uric acid levels by consuming tart cherries, vitamin C, quercetin, and drinking coffee, like I do

Resveratrol prevents calcification of arteries in rats & lowers zombie (senescent) cell markers via the longevity enzyme SIRT1👇Big effect #Wellbeing 1/4…
2/ Postmenopausal women are at risk of heart disease. These rats were made ‘post-menopausal’ by removing their ovaries. Reference:

3/ Sections through the aorta. Thinner is more useful. N = control, normal rat; O = removed the ovaries to simulate menopause; E = estradiol replacement therapy; R = resveratrol

Aging news: Abundance of a chemical called a DNA-methyl represents biological age🧬Using this clock, a 2-year study reports that switching to a low-sugar, Mediterranean-style diet with exclusive use of olive oil, slows aging 💪Details in thread tinyurl.com/4atd54s5
2/ The intervention diet included: (a) replacement of refined grains with whole grains; (b) at least one portion of raw vegetables & one of cooked vegetables each meal; (c) fish at least 2–3 times weekly...
3/ (d) reduction of fresh and processed red meat to less than once weekly; (e) consumption of >3–4 portions of legumes / pulses per week; (f) daily consumption of >2–3 portions fruit; (g) cakes & desserts consumed no more than once a week...

In human clinical studies, pure Resveratrol 🍷 improves blood sugar levels, good cholesterol, blood pressure, kidney filtration & fatty liver, as we showed in mice. I’m gonna keep mixing it with yogurt/olive oil. Refs👇 lifespanbook.com, p.304
Resveratrol is a grey powder, not brown and it’s fat- not water-soluble. If it’s brown and you take it with water, not ideal

20 year study of 13,466 people finds meat-inclusive ‘western’ diet is associated with more chronic diseases & cancer, compared to a vegetable & fruit-based diet 🥩🌱 link.springer.com/article/10.100…
“Westernized diets are known to be deficient in Mg, zinc, folate, and vitamins C, E, & K. Deficiencies in the micronutrients above [are] related to metabolic syndrome, CVD, and coronary heart disease, which are principal causes of mortality in the U.S.”
Dietary patterns were categorized into ‘prudent’ (fruits and vegetables), ‘western’ (red meat, sweets, pastries, oils), ‘traditional’ (red meat, legumes, potatoes, bread), and ‘fish and alcohol’

Syringaresinol from Japanese Plums, like Resveratrol, activates the longevity enzyme SIRT1. New study confirms its benefits are due to a mimicry of fasting 🥗 tinyurl.com/3vnh36wz
Thanks @agingdoc1 for the heads up
This molecule is interesting. It prevents cellular senescence (formation of zombie cells 🧟‍♀️), boosts antioxidant defenses, suppresses enzymes that promote skin aging, and in 🐁 with excess oxidative damage, reverses skin aging 8 weeks #beauty tinyurl.com/rwh4rf2z
