good morning from unceded Darug lands☀️today on #Insiders are Saturday Paper politics corro Karen Middleton, Triple J politics reporter Shalailah Medhora and Westralian politics editor Lanai Scarr.
The interview is with Morrison government health minister Greg Hunt.
what Morrison wants: crunching into reverse, the prime minister road tests his election campaign slogans #Insiders
hard hats, says Speers admiringly, telling voters that Scott Morrison is in election mode as tho he is ever not campaigning. Speers then repeats what the prime minister says about opposition policy at the last election, a lie. #Insiders
the montage could be mistaken for a Liberal Party campaign ad. Clip after clip of Scott Morrison lying and Scott Morrison lying about lying, plus his campaign slogans. #Insiders
Bandt telling the truth on the carbon capture and storage scam, Albanese pointing to Morrison government climate failures - all spliced with what Morrison says to counter basic facts #Insiders
#MakingNews has a clip from the Cop whose significance I missed, a story on children getting vaxxed, and some desperate lies from Frydenberg on disastrous Liberal Party economic management #Insiders
editorialising from Speers on what Scott Morrison wants, how Scott Morrison wants to win the election, and erases as usual the fact that the press gallery is critical to their campaign strategy of lying about disastrous Coalition economic management. #Insiders
we open with #COP26 shortcomings and Middleton and Scarr both say the world has not taken sufficient action and Australia certainly has not done enough [paraphrased] #Insiders
the commitment to come back in a year and make firmer commitments seems to be the #COP26 news. The #Insiders panel ask whether this means it is in an Australian election year. Seems it is set for November and this beyond the next federal election. #Insiders
EVs. Medhora says the biggest problem is affordability. Speers repeats the Morrison lines and then plays a clip of Morrison saying the Morrison lies. Middleton says Morrison is sucking the emotion from “end the weekend” to put it on climate wars via EVs. #Insiders
it is about decreasing emissions, says Scarr. We are a dumping ground for emotions intensive vehicles because there is no legislated CO2 vehicle emissions standard. But will Labor take a VES to the next election asked Speers. #Insiders
clip of Plibersek saying there is no VES. Scarr says EVs “tripped up both leaders” at the last election. Middleton says give Morrison an inch and he takes a mile. But this is the problem for Labor, says Speers. “Give him an inch and he’ll smash it” Speers says. #Insiders
Medhora has the numbers on EV uptake. She drops a pin in 2030 for emissions reductions and EV uptake. Middleton says the manufacturers will stop making high emissions cars. The demand is there, says Scarr. Hmm yes the prime minister said this week, says Speers. #Insiders
the planned corruption of the CEFC by the Morrison government. They want to give money earmarked for investment in renewables to their fossil fuel buddies, presumably Santos and its CCS “project”. #Insiders
Scarr says we need to invest in thus far unscaleable and unproven technology. This seems to be an argument for corrupting the Clean Energy Finance Corp and giving cash to Santos rather than say properly funding the CSIRO. #Insiders
the McKinsey modelling. Medhora says it falls 15% short. It is not a net zero commitment, she says, because the modelling only gets 85% of the way there. So what are Labor going to do, says Speers. #Insiders
are Labor going to pay for their own modelling, asks Middleton. Labor could use the modelling paid for by the BCA chuckles Speers hur hur hur.
#Insiders
clip of Dr Fauci on booster shots to segue to the interview. Essential, says Speers to Hunt. Yes? Hunt says we are first in the world after Israel to start a whole of nation booster program. Goodness. He is launching a campaign today saying get a jab. #Insiders
so is it a three dose program? asks Speers. Hunt says Murphy and ATAGI advise that two doses is fully vaccinated. He the recites the take home from a column published this weekend penned by Professor Peter van Onselen. #Insiders
Hunt sounds well off the mark. We have hit a mark he says. Throws a few percentages around. Says they “will continue to follow the medical advice on risk”. He is announcing opening international terminals today. With duty free, prompts Speers. Yes duty free says Hunt. #Insiders
the reminder of his duty free talking point is the only interruption from Speers, who lets Hunt ramble on about grandchildren and grandparents and children and cancer and humanity and then interrupts to feed him a few lines about families reunited and Christmas. #Insiders
seems Speers has chosen state borders for the performative conflict today. After asking a federal minister about when WA should re-open, Speers asks about Indigenous people and vaccination (he calls this “rates”). Hunt says “it” is uptake, not access. #Insiders
Hunt name checks Ken Wyatt and Pat Turner and Indigenous controlled health orgs and we move on to children (under 12s) and vaccines. Hunt says only the USA has provided emergency approval for 5-11 year olds. #Insiders
the Aust approval body are medical experts and operate independently and do not want to rush approval, says Hunt. What about grandparents hugging kids at christmas? - Speers. Hunt says he will leave that to the experts and blathers about Australian families for a bit #Insiders
this Frankie J Holden ad must be super cringe for Hunt to keep spruiking it like this. Commonwealths ad buy cash for media corporations tho I guess. Unless it is another YouTube foray. #Insiders
just quickly says Speers to the bloke who was Abbott and Turnbull and Morrison government environment minister from memory. About #COP26. We have set our target says Hunt. He quotes Shakespeare and a Morrison slogan. #Insiders
have we agreed to update our targets next year? asks Speers. Is that what we have agreed to in Glasgow? Hunt says he will leave [existential threats to the future of humanity] to others and reels off cheap Morrison slogans like a man with an ear worm. Meet n beat etc. #Insiders
Middleton says the Morrison government will kick their “target” into the long grass until after the election. Medhora, optimistically, says “they will legislate what they know they can achieve”. Counterpoint: they will not legislate shit bc he does not have the numbers. #Insiders
clip of Keating on the absence of Australian geostrategic interests in Taiwan. Middleton says he was extremely benign and if China moves then Australia will have a right decision. Very tuff, nods Speers gravely. #Insiders
we should be debating how we handle this relationship [with China] says Speers. No word on the fact Morrison has trashed the relationship. Clip of Albanese saying the usual (trade with China matters, abridged). #Insiders
Scarr says Keating is a distraction for Albanese and refs the hawkish nonsense Dutton came out with this week on Sunrise. Speers and Middleton say Morrison can/will/has weaponised Keating’s words to “go the cheap anti-China” line. They mean racism. #Insiders
lmao graphic of which seats the leaders are campaigning and margins. Extended clip of Morrison and his cheap sloganeering. Speers repeats this Morrison slogan of the week for the eleventieth time. #Insiders
how does this east coast campaigning - where Morrison is attempting to capitalise hur hur on the re-opening after lockdowns - he means appropriating credit for the efforts made by Premiers and residents - play in WA? Lanai? You must miss your family in WA? #Insiders
lol Lanai is from Sydney and her family are in Sydney, she says. She just works as the political editor of the only major West Australian newspaper. #Insiders
Middleton explains how the federal Liberals are counting on the strategy they have chosen in Victoria, hoping the state Labor government will cop shutdown frustration while federal politicians who did nothing but snipe reap votes. #Insiders
Speers responds by again telling us ~ what Liberal Party politicians want voters to think ~ about their disastrous economic management. He is nothing if not consistent. #Insiders
#TalkingPictures is up. Chatfield is an insomniacs [Keating] man.
#FinalObservations 1 is Medhora saying an Aboriginal man was found dead in Cessnock Prison this week [an Aboriginal man was shot dead in Seven Hills too] and that steal thing has been criminalised in VIC #Insiders
#FinalObservations 2 is Scarr saying the government has to finalise its religious bigotry bill this session? Was that the claim? And that there is chatter about former NSW Liberal Party leader Gladys Berejiklian running in the federal seat of Warringah. #Insiders
#FinslObservations 3 is Middleton saying the Morrison government has to elect a new speaker - this is a bigger numbers deal than anyone is saying - and she pays tribute to outgoing Speaker Tony Smith. #Insiders
the outtakes are a couple of campaign stop bloopers from the [undeclared publicly funded tedious 7 month long federal election] campaign trail #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
tip jar here 🙏🏼

tough decision, Middleton said. Not right. Tough.
sigh. And stealthing (removing condom without consent) has been criminalised in Victoria. Not steal thing. Stealthing.

Laura Tingle seems to be the only press gallery journalist reporting on the fact that both the Berejiklian and Morrison governments decided to enact partisan pandemic policies across Sydney.

abc.net.au/news/2021-11-1…
when former Liberal Party leader now under investigation for corruption Gladys Berejiklian stood up every day bleating at us to get bigger houses and have smaller families so low paid precariously employed western Sydney workers could keep delivering 85% of essential services.
I wonder* if Berejiklian’s office shredded a heap of documents and trashed a bunch of multi million dollar contracts at various stages of negotiation and completion so as to fuck over her factional enemies in the Liberal Party no matter what the cost to the NSW public.

when he speaks about Nixon in China, take a moment to appreciate the fact that Keating was an MP in the Whitlam government.
Whitlam visited during the Cold War. The Morrison government can not get anyone to pick up the phone. Or respond to a text.
heh. Direct comparisons with the US based on fact. Press gallery journos are not equipped to process this kind of talk.

portraying Scott Morrison as having done “not much” is unfathomable to me. All the lives he attacked and destroyed as Minister for “Border Protection” and “Human Services” and Treasurer. The planetary collapse he advocates for as Prime Minister.

theguardian.com/australia-news…
many things Morrison does are monumentally cruel and destructive. Individuals, households, population sectors and classes of persons are worse off, more anxious, poorer, unhappier, in despair, and dead - following decisions and actions for which Morrison is directly responsible.
ministerial decisions taken by Morrison cause real life and death impacts for people, including children, who are already persecuted, struggling, dealing with unimaginable hardships. “He hadn’t done very much” is a complete mischaracterisation of his record in public life.

scientists, activists, even notionally leftist parties have toiled away in mitigating anthropogenic warming for decades, while under relentless attack from conservative forces. This conservative strolls out at a minute to midnight, claims credit, and is praised to the skies.
Malcolm Turnbull did the same on marriage equality. He did not even NOD to the decades of struggle by LGBTIQ activists and their supporters. He regularly touts the Marriage Act amendment as his achievement, his legacy.
conservatives destabilised the global economy until it collapsed, weaponised countercyclical public spending by centrist leaders - on rescuing neoliberal capitalism - and went straight back to lying about public debt to regain power and resume trashing the world for profit.

seems journalists do not know who and what is giving Turnbull and his criticisms of Morrison so much prominence ahead of the actual Opposition. Odd.
collective journalistic wisdom has landed. The narrative is that ordinary Australians - whoever we are - have no interest in or maybe do not know who is the President of France.
so funny hearing Crabb say Morrison floated the idea of not going to Glasgow in case he failed to reach an agreement with his own Coalition colleagues [paraphrased]. No, he didn’t. That was journalists. Morrison leaked that it was about doing more quarantine.
