A friend of mine has been critical of his local Tory MP on the socials. My friend’s spouse works in the local community. So said MP has complained to her boss about her husband’s politics. This is bullying. This is not OK.
I’m not naming names as I’ve been asked not to (yet) but he’s ok with my sending these tweets.
If anyone has a useful suggestion on how my pal can do something about this while protecting his privacy, I’ll gladly pass that on.
And by the way, what we’re talking about here is not vitriol or abuse, but straightforward criticism of this MP’s voting record - the kind of thing any constituent ought to be able to do in the public arena without prompting threats against his family.
We go in hard against regimes that do this. In Belarus, protestors can find their parents out of a state-sector job. In other countries, bloggers and their families are harassed while the government stands by without defending their freedom of expression. How is this different?
Just want to say thanks to everyone for engaging with this thread and for all the suggestions, I'm reading them all and sharing them with my friend, even if I'm not replying to everything. 👍
Update: my friend has written up a complaint to the parliamentary standards commissioner and will be submitting it in the next few days.

I started saving them rather than binning them only after a few years but I have a full alphabetical set with plenty of redundancy. Unfortunately the format has now been changed so this is as big as the collection is going to get. Image

Remember the outrage when a European Commissioner gave a job in her office to her dentist? Leading to the resignation of the entire Commission? And the meal that Tory europhobes - including one Owen Paterson - made of it all? Fucking hypocrites.
Just imagine if British Tory Ministers were held to the same standard as European Commissioners. Just imagine. ImageImageImage
The event is seared into my memory but others might want a refresher. theguardian.com/world/2003/jan…

Mr electric blue BMW M3 undertaking the traffic jam on the M40 at speed on the hard shoulder just now, I want to thank you for the joy it brought into my life when that unmarked police car spotted you and went after you. 💋🤏
The way you tried to dodge into the traffic to lose yourself when you checked your mirror was genuinely hilarious, as was the look on your face as he pulled you out of your car.
Just realised I caught the whole thing on my dashcam. 😂 (Blurred his face & plate for privacy - removed soundtrack of me laughing like a hyena.)
