This is an absolutely appalling verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.

There is no right to carry a firearm — much less an illegally bought assault rifle — across state lines to terrorize and play “police officer.” He should be held accountable. 🧵
Let’s be clear, without guns at this protest, no lives would have been lost.

We must fight against the extremist gun lobby rhetoric that emboldened Rittenhouse’s white vigilantism, leading him to create a dangerous situation that resulted in the deaths of two people.
While this verdict is just an exclamation point on why more guns do not make us safer, SCOUTS just heard an NRA-filed Second Amendment case that could gut our gun safety laws.

We don't need another Kenosha tragedy. We must ensure SCOTUS rejects this case

We will also not forget the root of this issue. Kyle Rittenhouse murdered 2 people during protests against the police shooting of #JacobBlake.

Jacob has yet to receive justice.

We must continue to fight America's systemic racism, which fuels police violence + white vigilantism.
We will #HonorWithAction and remember Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, who were murdered, and Gaige Grosskreutz, who was injured.

We also will continue to ensure that Kenosha residents feel safe in their city.

JUST IN: The Senate will meet on March 23 to discuss action to prevent gun violence. This comes just as we observe 40 years since Jim Brady was shot on 3/31/81.

Our senators have the chance to honor Jim Brady and save countless lives by strengthening his namesake Brady Bill.
On that gloomy March day in 1981, Jim was partially paralyzed for life. Afterward, he and his wife, Sarah, dedicated the rest of their lives to Jim's health — and the health of our country. They took on the NRA and won the Brady Bill.

To date, the Brady Bill and its Brady Background Check system have blocked 4 million gun sales to people who should not possess firearms, saving countless lives.

But deadly gaps in background checks still allow guns into the hands of people who shouldn't have them.

Two years ago today, a white supremacist used an assault weapon to murder 51 people at two New Zealand mosques.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern immediately moved to ban assault weapons.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., we continue to suffer senseless massacres using these weapons.

Time and time again, assault weapons are used in the deadliest mass shootings in America.

They are a weapon choice for America's mass shooters because they are uniquely lethal, allowing the most murders in the shortest amount of time. #BanAssaultWeapons Image
In shootings in which assault weapons or high-capacity magazines are used, 155% more people are shot and 47% people are killed compared to those without them.

These weapons of war have no place in civilian hands. #BanAssaultWeapons bradyunited.org/fact-sheets/wh…

27 years ago on Feb. 28, 1994, the #BradyBill became law. It established our nation's background check system on gun sales.

This is the story of violence survivor Jim Brady — and how we have the opportunity today to strengthen the Brady Bill and save even more lives.

In 1981, @WhiteHouse Press Secretary Jim Brady was shot in the head during the assassination attempt on President Reagan.

He spent the rest of his life physically recovering — and fighting for solutions to prevent gun violence. #EndGunViolence #GunReform ImageImageImage
The gunman who left Jim Brady paralyzed would have been blocked from buying his gun if federal background checks had existed.

This tragedy — and so many more like it, which continue today — could have been prevented by common-sense gun reform solutions. bradyunited.org/reports/how-br…

6 years ago today, the world lost the incredible Jim Brady.

In 1981, Jim was shot in the head in the assassination attempt on Reagan. He spent the rest of his life fighting for stronger gun laws — winning his namesake Brady Bill.

When Jim Brady died 6 years ago today in 2014, his death was ruled a gun homicide from complications from the shooting. He had been paralyzed that day, but he and his wife, Sarah, turned the tragedy into a movement. #EndGunViolence bradyunited.org/podcast/episod…
Jim and Sarah recognized it wasn't just Jim’s life that needed saving. Lifelong Republicans, they learned that America was suffering senseless bloodshed because of weak gun laws and a reckless gun lobby. In fact, Jim aptly called the NRA the "Evil Empire." #EndGunViolence

The shooter who left Jim Brady paralyzed could have been blocked from buying his gun under the Brady Bill.

He'd lied on the federal form when he bought the firearm. The tragedy had been prevented. #BackgroundChecksSaveLives

Tonight's debate is over, but we need to talk more about the shooting at Emanuel AME Church — which is just a block from the debate stage.

How did the Charleston shooter get a gun? B/c of a deadly gap in our nation's background checks system. #DemDebate #GunReformNow

THREAD 👇
The Charleston shooter would have failed a background check.

But our laws allow gun sales to go thru after 3 days — even if a background check hasn’t been completed.

That's all it takes to give a gun to a white supremacist intent on murder. #DemDebate
This week marks a year since the House passed @WhipClyburn’s bill to fix this deadly gap, called the #CharlestonLoophole.

This loophole is no small gap. In 2016-17 alone, it let +9,000 prohibited buyers obtain firearms.

That puts every one of us at great risk. #DemDebate
