#SCOTUS orders coming now, followed by the first opinion(s) of the term at 10a.
Here is the orders list, which mainly consists of cases the justices decided not to hear: supremecourt.gov/orders/courtor…
The only #SCOTUS opinion today is in Mississippi v. Tennessee, a water rights case: supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf…
(I didn’t understand why everyone was leaning so heavily into the whole “we’re going to get #SB8,” since the Supreme Court does what it wants, but I also didn’t know if they knew something I didn’t!)
In any event: No decision on #SB8 today.

Julius Jones will not be executed, but per the Oklahoma governor’s order nor will he be eligible, ever, to be let out of prison. ImageImage
Here’s the relevant part: Image
The ability of the governor to put this particular sort of condition on the grant of clemency could (and possibly will) be challenged, but courts definitely have allowed certain conditions to be placed on grants of clemency in the past.

So, my summer was great (until I got Covid), and I’ve really enjoyed doing project-based work, from columns to speaking to podcasts and beyond. Now that I’m recovered from Covid and back from my (wonderful!) Paris trip, I’m trying to get things a bit more organized going forward.
I am a legal expert, having written about the Supreme Court for 20+ years. I have deep knowledge of LGBTQ and criminal justice issues, government and politics, and media and journalism. My expertise ranges from in-depth process issues to real-world effects on people everywhere.
In short: If you are looking for an expert in any of these ares, I’m your person! I love creative work, too, so do think creatively about how I could be used — writing, editing, speaking, analysis, strategy, teaching, etc.

BTW: I’ll be listening to these #SCOTUS arguments, starting at 10a, and tweeting anything notable I catch.
First up is the Puerto Rico SSI case, which I wrote about for @MSNBC here: msnbc.com/opinion/puerto…
An amici brief from DC and other territories and states questions the federal government's position that you can discriminate against states so long as you meet rational basis:

There are others who know even more directly how offensively ahistorical this is, but, suffice it to say, this is complete bullshit: There was an entire infrastructure of laws passed and policies implemented stigmatizing people with AIDS — some of which still exist!

"The FDA initially banned gay and bisexual men from ever giving blood in 1983, then revised the lifetime ban in 2015 to a year's sexual abstinence." nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-ou…
