On Nov 15, 2021 an #AtmosphericRiver hit the #Fraser Valley and Canyon. In support of a BC Salmon Restoration Innovation Fund #BCSRIF project and with support from @HakaiInstitute, we flew the Fraser Canyon to document the #floods and #landslides that occurred. 1/18 #BCStorm
Our research examines how the size and frequency of landslides in Fraser Canyon affect river morphology, flow dynamics, #salmon migration, and their genetics. What follows are names, pictures, and coordinates of #landslide events we identified, both big and small. 2/18 #BCStorm
Wahleach Slides (49°14'10.01"N; 121°40'40.35"W). Debris flows tracks that fail every few years on East side of Fraser River near the Wahleach Hydro Plant. They cross the TMX pipeline construction. There are two major deposits on #Highway1 and many smaller failures. 3/18 #BCStorm
Ruby Creek Slide (49°18'48.07"N; 121°40'28.77"W). A mudslide that blocked #Highway7 between Agassiz and Hope on the West side of Fraser River. 4/18 #BCStorm
Lambs View Canyon Slide (49°43'44.87"N; 121°26'6.28"W). A landslide that washed out the rail line at Lambs View Canyon on the West side of Fraser Canyon. There are derailed engines and cars from past slides. 5/18 #BCStorm
North Hell’s Gate Slide (49°47'23.40"N; 121°27'8.31"W). A landslide that washed out the rail line North of Hell’s Gate on the West side of Fraser Canyon. 6/18 #BCStorm
Paul’s Rapid Slide (49°47'53.58"N; 121°27'22.44"W). Small landslide that on the West side of Fraser Canyon that undercut the rail line. 7/18 #BCStorm
Scuzzy Rapid Slide (49°48'31.71"N; 121°27'31.37"W). Small debris flow on the West side of Fraser Canyon that crossed the rail line. 8/18 #BCStorm
Shrypttahooks7 Slide (49°49'10.10"N; 121°26'45.17"W). Small, shallow seated landslide above the rail line on the West side of Fraser Canyon. 9/18 #BCStorm
Anderson Creek Flood (49°50'28.35"N; 121°26'4.83"W). Flood that built a delta into Fraser Canyon on the East side, south of Boston Bar. There is no landslide upstream. Sediment is coming from undermined slopes and bank erosion. A lot of wood is being discharged 10/18 #BCStorm
North Bend Road Slide (49°53'32.37"N; 121°27'22.39"W). A small landslide that has washed out the road near North Bend on West side of Fraser Canyon. 11/18 #BCStorm
North Bend Rail Yard Slide (49°53'47.10"N; 121°27'15.66"W). A landslide that washed out the North Bend rail yard on the West side of Fraser Canyon. Several rail cars (grain) collapsed into the slide scar. Built a new fan into the Fraser River. 12/18 #BCStorm
Spyrum Creek Flood (49°56'31.48"N; 121°28'14.73"W). Flood that rapidly built a fan-delta into the East side of Fraser Canyon, North of Boston Bar. 13/18 #BCStorm
Little Creek Slides (50° 3'21.92"N; 121°32'37.13"W). A pair of landslides that washed out the rail line on the East side of Fraser Canyon. 14/18
Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) Slide (50° 3'56.76"N; 121°32'38.85"W) Pt 1. A landslide that originated in Falls Creek, washed out #Highway1, then the railway and then built a fan-delta into Fraser Canyon on the East side. This is the biggest slide in the Canyon. 15/18 #BCStorm
Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) Slide (50° 3'56.76"N; 121°32'38.85"W) Pt 2. Rail cars are suspended on the rail line and there is a new fan built into the river. 16/18 #BCStorm
George Creek Slide (50°10'56.13"N, 121°34'56.58"W). A landslide at George Creek on West side of Fraser Canyon. 17/18 #BCStorm
Tank Hill Flood / Debris Flow ( 50°15'18.85"N; 121°26'47.39"W). A post-fire, runoff-generated debris flow that washed out both #Highway1 and the rail line at Tank Hill on the South side of the Thompson River. The watershed was mostly burnt by the #Lytton fires. 18/18 #BCStorm
Here are some better versions of pics of the Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) Slide (50° 3'56.76"N; 121°32'38.85"W)
