High Converting Upsell Copy

How to write copy for your upsell pages that will persuade at least 30% of your buyers to buy again.

// THREAD //
Before we start...

This is the second in a series of threads all about upsells.

In it I'm going to share with you a proven framework for your upsell copy.

And in case you missed it, the first covered what to upsell:

Ok, let's dive right in...

Here's the 9 part framework for effective upsell copy:

- Headline
- Congratulate
- Future pace
- New problem
- Agitate
- Your upsell offer
- Benefits
- Proof
- Close

Now let's look at each part...
Headline

Your headline should not be a typical sales page headline.

Instead it wants to let the customer know the buying process isn't over yet.
For example:

"Your Order is Not Yet Complete

Please Read/Watch This Important Message Below Now"
Congratulate

Your lead should congratulate the customer on their purchase.

These are the points it wants to hit:

- Congratulations

- You made a great decision

- You're going to love your new product
Future Pace

Then resell them.

Let them know the benefits they'll get from their new purchase.

And how their life will look now they've got your product.
New Problem

Introduce a new problem to your customer.

For example, for upselling copywriting templates, it might be:

- Even when you know what you're doing.

- Copywriting can still take days or even weeks.

- A-list writers can spend a month on a single sales letter.
Agitate

Then agitate the problem.

Show them the consequences.

Sticking with the templates:

- And that takes time away from the rest of your business.

- And from your family.

- You might not even finish your copy.
Your Upsell Offer

Now you can introduce your upsell offer.

And it's a good idea to start with the how and why you came up with it.

Carrying on with the templates:

- I know because it happened to me.
- I was supposed to be an expert copywriter but I struggled to finish anything.

- Something had to change.

- I started going through what worked for me.

- And I put together a collection of templates that covered almost every type of copy.

- Now I'd like to offer them to you.
Benefits

With the offer introduced...

You can now go into exactly what you're offering.

And most importantly the benefits it delivers.
Proof

Then give your customers proof your offer does what you claim.

If you don't have proof...

Instead (or as well as) you can walk them through how your offer works.
Close

Now it's time to close the sale:

- Justify the price.

- State the guarantee.

- Let them know this is their only chance to buy (or at least at this price).

- Restate the big benefits.

- Ask them to buy.

And that's how you can write powerful upsell copy.

To sum up...
The upsell copy framework:

- Headline
- Congratulate
- Future pace
- New problem
- Agitate
- Your upsell offer
- Benefits
- Proof
- Close

Upsells 101

Upsells are a powerful way to make more money.

But most businesses do them wrong.

Here's how to do them right.

// THREAD //
Before we dive in...

This is the first in a series of upsell threads.

It covers upsells that make the most money.

Future threads:

- How to write upsell copy.
- How to get paid to write upsells.

And if they're popular I might share some more advanced techniques.
Let's start with the basics:

What is an upsell?

An upsell is an offer you make to your customers immediately after they've bought from you.

For example:

"Would like fries with that?"

And I'm sure you've seen it online:

- You decide to buy something

The Ultimate Marketing Plan by Dan Kennedy

Dan lays out the fundamentals of direct response marketing.

A great book for anyone new to marketing to get an understanding of exactly what direct response is.
The 1-Page Marketing Plan by Allan Dib

This builds on the above book and helps you create a simple and effective plan for your marketing.

Though it is, to put it mildly, heavily inspired by the work of Dean Jackson and Joe Polish.

Effective Bump Offers

Bump offers are a great way to boost your AOV.

They don't need much copy.

And they convert better than normal upsells.

Especially if you're using one of these two types of bump offer.

// SHORT THREAD //
1) The No-Brainer:

Something that makes more sense to buy than not to.

So if you're selling a $1,000 tablet...

Then a great bump offer would be a case for it.

The prospect will want to keep their new purchase safe and the price will seem trivial compared to it.
2) The Exclusive

This wants to be a genuine one-time-only, never available again, offer.

And it's usually best if it's something in a different format to the main offer.

So if you're selling a course on FB ads...

You don't want the bump to be more info.

Instead...
