Get Paid to Write Upsells

If you're a copywriter...

Here's how you can make money writing upsell copy.

// THREAD //
Before we start...

This is the third in a series of threads about upsells.

I'm going to share a method you can use to get paid to write upsell copy.

You can find the previous thread here:

Here's the method in a nutshell:

You earn a performance only fee by increasing AOV.

Now let's break it down...
First let's make sure we're on the same page:

AOV stands for average order value.

It's the average amount a customer spends when they place an order with you.

For example...
If you sell a $50 widget...

Then your AOV will be $50.

As that's all the customer can spend.

But...
If you add an upsell for $100.

And 50% of your customers buy it.

Now your AOV is $100.
So just adding a single upsell has doubled the AOV!

And this is important for back-end offers as it means more money for a business.

But it's vital for front-end offers because the higher your AOV...
The more traffic you can afford to buy.

And it can even turn money-losing offers into money-making offers.

So any serious business is always looking to increase AOV.

Which is where you come in...
If a business has poor upsell offers...

Or worse...

No upsell offers.

You offer to write upsell copy for them.

For no upfront fee. Performance pay only.

And this works best...
For businesses you've already worked with.

As there needs to be trust between you.

You don't want to get ripped off. And they don't want some clown messing up their funnel.

And all you need do...
Is follow the advice in my previous two threads on choosing an upsell offer and then writing the upsell copy.

And as long as you're a semi-decent copywriter you should have little problem improving their AOV.

To get paid...
You want to ask for between 5 and 10 percent of the AOV increase you deliver.

(Depending on the price of their offers and their margins)

And make sure you agree this in writing in advance.

So if your upsell adds an extra $100,000 AOV in a year...
You'd get between $5,000 and $10,000.

Not a fortune.

But it's an excellent amount for the work.

It's excellent value for the business.

And if you do two or three or more it soon stacks up.

To sum up...
- Know what upsell offers work best.

- Know how to write effective upsell copy.

- Approach businesses you've already worked for.

- Offer to improve their upsells for a pay for performance fee.

It's a win-win deal.

Upsells 101

Upsells are a powerful way to make more money.

But most businesses do them wrong.

Here's how to do them right.

// THREAD //
Before we dive in...

This is the first in a series of upsell threads.

It covers upsells that make the most money.

Future threads:

- How to write upsell copy.
- How to get paid to write upsells.

And if they're popular I might share some more advanced techniques.
Let's start with the basics:

What is an upsell?

An upsell is an offer you make to your customers immediately after they've bought from you.

For example:

"Would like fries with that?"

And I'm sure you've seen it online:

- You decide to buy something

The Ultimate Marketing Plan by Dan Kennedy

Dan lays out the fundamentals of direct response marketing.

A great book for anyone new to marketing to get an understanding of exactly what direct response is.
The 1-Page Marketing Plan by Allan Dib

This builds on the above book and helps you create a simple and effective plan for your marketing.

Though it is, to put it mildly, heavily inspired by the work of Dean Jackson and Joe Polish.

Effective Bump Offers

Bump offers are a great way to boost your AOV.

They don't need much copy.

And they convert better than normal upsells.

Especially if you're using one of these two types of bump offer.

// SHORT THREAD //
1) The No-Brainer:

Something that makes more sense to buy than not to.

So if you're selling a $1,000 tablet...

Then a great bump offer would be a case for it.

The prospect will want to keep their new purchase safe and the price will seem trivial compared to it.
2) The Exclusive

This wants to be a genuine one-time-only, never available again, offer.

And it's usually best if it's something in a different format to the main offer.

So if you're selling a course on FB ads...

You don't want the bump to be more info.

Instead...
