Been a while since I've done a round-up of news relating to the Digital Vaccine Record / SMART Health Cards space.
This time I've got some big news to share. Buckle up! 🧵
1/ 🍎 Huge congrats to @WADeptHealth, who today announced the launch of #WAVerify! Washington state is now the 10th state to launch a state-wide Digital Vaccine Record system based on SMART Health Cards.
...if you saw waverify.doh.wa.gov and thought it looked familiar, you'd be right! @CADeptTech released our Digital Vaccine Record code to the public domain; two months later, Washington State is the first to deploy that code for their own residents. 🎉 techblog.cdt.ca.gov/2021/09/releas…
I expect to see many more states follow Washington's lead in the very near future; it is beyond thrilling to see the work that my team at @CADeptTech did this summer turn into a collaborative multi-state effort for the benefit of so many more residents across the country. 🙏🏻❤️
@CADeptTech Also note that if your state isn't one of the ten already issuing SMART Health Cards, you're not necessarily out of luck: hundreds of Epic and Cerner customers are issuing for their patients, as well as @CVSHealth, @Walmart Pharmacy, and others. Full list: vci.org/issuers
3/ 🇮🇱 On the international front: in Israel, the @IsraelMOH is now allowing California and New York residents holding SMART Health Cards to present their DVR as proof of vaccination for entry: corona.health.gov.il/en/directives/…
4/ 🇬🇧 As of yesterday: California, New York, and Washington State residents traveling to the UK can now use their Digital Vaccine Record to prove their vaccination status (h/t @UKin_SF, and nice work on the Firth GIF):
- Update your iPhone to iOS 15.1, and you can store any valid SMART Health Card in both Apple Health and Apple Wallet, making retrieval super simple. (Android users, this works on Google Pay on Android 11+!)
- If you're in one of the states that has not yet implemented a Digital Vaccine Record system like ours, I worked with @CAPublicHealth to write a playbook that should answer a bunch of questions and help get you started:
PS - if you want to hear more about the tech behind the California Digital Vaccine Record system, this podcast I did with @mmasnick in August is a good deep-dive: techdirt.com/articles/20210…
PPS - if you're a small business / restaurant / bar / club / etc. and want to scan and verify these digital vaccination records, you can either get the SMART Health Card Verifier App from @commons_prjct here: thecommonsproject.org/smart-health-c…
or install the State of New York Excelsior Pass Scanner (which will read the QR code + display whether it represents a fully-vaccinated record): apps.apple.com/us/app/nys-exc… (also available on Google Play)
(the New York app is *not* NY-specific - it will read any valid SMART Health Card, and will also read PCR test results displayed as a SMART Health Card)

This blog post provides a bit more background on what the QR code is, and how it works. I'm going to pull out a few specifics in this thread, and add a few other details I think are worth calling attention to:
1/ The QR code in the Digital Vaccine Record is a SMART Health Card, an open-source framework developed by @SMARTHealthIT and embraced by VCI.org; more details at smarthealth.cards.
Launch day! I forgot how fun (and yes, stressful) these can be. 🧵
1/ Today, California became the first state in the country to launch an open source, standards-based digital vaccination record. Using the SMART Health Card framework, any resident who wants a digital copy of their vaccination record can get one at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.
2/ This is entirely voluntary - anyone who's been vaccinated in California who wants a digital copy of their CDC card, this is for you. Don't want a digital copy? Totally cool! You still got vaccinated, which helped California re-open this week. Thank you. 🙏🏻
1/ While I'm under no illusions that Trump's transition to Joe Biden will be graceful, I'm inspired by each of the prior transitions that preceded 45's hand-off to 46.
