Talk #2 #IOCprev2021 : when setting up Athlete Health sys 4 teams 1st need 2 know what is the problem, from @TheRealPCB injury surv🗣️:
🏏Yes ✅injury & illness profiles diff
⚠️rates: resp illness, spine, calf mm's
⚠️burdens: LL tendons, respiratory
⚠️high reoccurrence
thread 1/
2/Reason: altho #cricket popular in South Asia there is lack of epidemiological research 2 provide a focus 4 optimal injury/illness manag & prev. Due 2 diff in socio-culture, diets, medical, workloads, play style, pitches, out-fields, dev/LTAD etc..cant assume same as West
3/ Injury surv over 365 days of all @TheRealPCB centrally contracted players + any players selected for #PakistanCricket camps/tours > contracts require reporting 2 PCB, but 2 ensure consistency also team physio phone/telehealth wth players + franchise/NCA/clubs regularly
⚠️54% of injuries occurred via gradual onset
⚠️36% occurred bowling
⚠️43% of all injuries were reoccurrence.
⚠️Match injury inc was 210/1000 4 medical attention inj (MA) & 22.5/1000 player-days 4 time-lose (TL) inj.
⚠️Match TL seasonal injury incidence was 86/100 players yrs.
🤔Doesn't have high hamstring injuries rate like 🇦🇺
Prevalence/burden:
🏏MTL: 4.3% unavailable/intern match, 10.5% in ODI's.
🏏GTL = 5.6% unavailable 4 training any time
⚠️ Domestic GTL = Tendons
⚠️ International tour GTL = Joints & Muscles; spec. respiratory illness, calf muscles
🤔 MA = At any time 39% of players injured
>> Similar injury incidence compared 🇦🇺🇳🇿🇬🇧🇿🇦; BUT ⏫ rates of lumbar spine & calf muscles, and ⏫ burdens of tendon injuries; with ⏬ rates of hamstring injuries & (?) relative lack of stress #'s 😷🤒High Illnesses rates & burden in cricket has not previously been reported!
Lack stress #s may b due 2 playing style + pitch conditions in PAK (⬇️ pace bowler workloads) BUT ⛔️ wth ⬆️ reoccurrence rates & youth squads data (not included), cld be poss survivorship bias: lost in youth, lack of Mx + miss diagnosis> current players those survived wth Dysf?
Medical illness🤒rates (international) similar (11%) for:
✅🇳🇿 14.8% or 7.9%, Frost et al 13, Dovbysh & @DreidDuncan 21
----- BUT
⚠️🏴 2.7% @Craig_Ranson et al 20
⚠️🇦🇺 3/100 players yr @DrJohnOrchard et al 2016
= didnt differentiate international rates & using MTL rates
Medical illness burdens (prevalence) is low across other studies, where-as for #PakistanCricket medical illness resulted in 22% of the general time-lose & 0.7% prev 🇵🇰 🆚 0.2% prev 🇦🇺 or 4.6% of time-lose 🇳🇿! Poss due to diff reportin, as players with illness often still play
Concern with #Pakistancricket injury reoccurrence rates too, 43% (SIC related 47%):
🇱🇰12% (SIC 31-35%) @stephen_mount 14, 15
WI: 20%
🇦🇺 Men: 8% @DrJohnOrchard '02, BUT women incl'in MA injuries = 27% @Nim_Perera
>need 4 @TheRealPCB improve med resources, RTP sys & protocols?
11/ ✅diff injury & illness profiles exist in South Asian players due a range of different factors. This study will help 2 implement specific strategies 2 improve players health in 🇵🇰, further research needed to determine the optimal strategies.
Talk form #IOCprev2021: Maximising availability 4 training matters ✅🏏
⬇️ Time lost by nat cricket team players (in training/clubs/National team) 2 injury & illness 😷🤕over 1yr PRIOR 2 World Cups has POSITIVE CORRELATION coeff 0.82, pvalue <0.05
👩🏫 Thread 1/.
2/ Method involved Int Cricket Consensus @DrJohnOrchard, @Craig_Ranson et al..2016 definition for determining match (MTL) and general time-lose (GTL). Tracked media sources, MTL fairly accurate determine MTL prevalence, as Orchard & J.Hayes 2002 found in NBA, BUT GTL was diff..
3/ BUT 4 GTL presents errors esp fringe players, eg. team not reporting of player with Flu's having modified training for few days with nil MTL. Used players SoMe posts 2 try improve accuracy. Media sources incl @ESPNcricinfo team sheets, nat cricket boards offical reports etc.
