#cricket #stats #geeky thread alert - don't bother reading this thread if you're not interested in either cricket or statistics.

A few people have asked me why I never talk about a batter's average in particular countries. There's a really simple reason for that.
There just isn't enough international cricket played - particularly not international test cricket - to make most of those "averages in a country" statistics meaningful in any way.

There's so much randomness in results that looking at a sample size of (say) 12 innings is nuts.
What do I mean "randomness?" Well let's think about it this way. Each ball there's a chance that a batter will get runs, not get runs or get out. For the best batters, that risk of getting out will generally be lower, and it will fluctuate throughout an innings.

As per the FY17 Annual Report, @BCCI paid an INTEREST Cost of Rs115 Cr (400% YoY) while it’s INTEREST Income of Rs171 Cr (Fell 2% YoY).

BUT WHY were they paying 171Cr of Interest Costs when they had a CASH BALANCE of 3770 Cr (3560 Cr in FY16) ? ImageImage

#IPL is spreading hate amongst the citizens and minting money.

This is not a new analysis and it's known for most people but after watching yesterday's incident between #RCBvLSG this is the right time for all the cricket fans not to fall into this trap. 1/n
IPL has always been everything about #MONEY and #entertainment. The teams were based on most popular cities in #India so that each team will have larger fan following and representation, just like #football leagues. 2/n
The people behind #IPL were/are biggest #businessmen, #Celebrities from various fields and #politicians. It gathered enough attention when it got started as new league in 2008. Just because IPL has celebs backing doesn't mean it's gonna be a superhit league in the long run. 3/n

Strating out as a nightclub limbo dancer and fire-eater, he found a job was as a cook at Frederick's, a Chinese restaurant in Colaba and where the legendary Raj Singh Dungarpur, then President of the Cricket Club of India was a regular.
Frederick's was asked if could cater to Cricket Club of India, but turned down the offer. So Nelson took on the challenge. It was here that Dungarpur, who liked fried food asked Nelson for something spicy and crunchy with a gravy.

Cricket is one of the oldest and fastest growing sports around the world.

Here are 5 reasons why I'm bullish on the future of cricket:
1. Growing popularity

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), cricket is the second most popular sport in the world, with an estimated 2.5 billion fans globally.

Since 2007 there has been a 700% increase in cricket participation in the USA alone.
2. T20 format

The T20 format has been a game-changer for cricket, with the average attendance at Indian Premier League (IPL) matches increasing by 18.8% from 2018 to 2019.

The format has also helped attract a younger audience, with 66% of IPL viewers being under the age of 35.

"Richa started playing when she was around four years old. I used to take her to the club that I had represented at one time. I found out that she was not restless; she used to sit and watch the matches, used to pick the bat and played but never nagged about going home.
I also tried to get her to join table tennis but she was not interested as she tossed the bat after a couple of shots, saying 'I want to play cricket", recalls her proud father Manabendra Ghosh, a former club-level cricketer.

#Cricket in #America

The idea of a T20 League in America is nearing close to an eventual start. Here's a quick & short #thread on what's happening there.

Major League Cricket (#MLC) will be hosting its first player draft on March 9 at the NASA Space Centre in Houston, Texas.

It's finally all happening and you can see the footprints of #IPL already in a substantial manner.

But before I get to that, here's a bit on the draft.

Cricketers from all over the world who've settled in / relocated to America over the years will be part of the draft.

For instance, Corey Anderson now lives in Dallas. Unmukt Chand is based out of Philadelphia. Liam Plunkett lives there too. There are more.

Then there are cricketers playing MLC Div-2 (the feeder line). In 1st week of March, I'm hearing there's a scouting programmed planned.

"My father's dreams for me were connected to cricket. I knew if I did well in cricket, his soul would rest in peace", says 24-year-old #ChetanSakariya who made quite an impression with his IPL debut.

#IPL #IPL2023 #Cricket #Passion #Inspiration
Hailing from the small town of Vartej in Gujarat, Sakariya was the sole breadwinner for his family. He worked at his uncle's stationery shop in Bhavnagar as his father, a lorry driver, was bedridden after suffering a few accidents.
In return, his uncle helped nurture his cricketing dreams. After much hard work, the boy who once didn't have money to buy cricket shoes got a chance to play in the Saurashtra under-16 team.

So, now that the ban on the use of #saliva on a #cricket ball is permanent, it's literally the end of an era where seam bowling is concerned.

Can't help but recollect a priceless conversation I had with the one-&-only -- Wasim Akram -- some years ago on this subject.

It was some promotional event and I found myself in conversation with the man. He, I thought, was in the mood to chat too.

And when he's in the mood to talk, I can tell you from that personal experience, you'll want to keep everything aside and just listen.

So, I listened.

"Ball jo banta tha... usme do main factors hote the. Saliva aur shine...

"Delivery khatm hone ke baad... ball ek specific route se waapis aata tha -- wicket-keeper se slip, slip se gully ya point, wahan se cover ya mid-off, & back to the bowler...

ICC announces changes to Playing Conditions.

The main changes to the Playing Conditions that come into effect on 1 October 2022 are:

#Cricket #CricketTwitter
Batters returning when caught:

When a batter is out Caught, the new batter will come in at the end the striker was, regardless of whether the batters crossed prior to the catch being taken.
Use of saliva to polish the ball:

This prohibition has been in place for over two years in international cricket as a Covid-related temporary measure and it is considered appropriate for the ban to be made permanent.

#CLRJames' deceptively benign question: “what do they know of cricket, who only cricket know?”, was a challenge to the public to re-consider the game in England’s elitist orthodoxy.
Given James failed in this task, what is the story of #cricket from a people’s perspective? 1/14
Although no #history is ever ‘definitive’, cricket has always been particular about whose voices are heard.
Like James, the game has had other maverick historians of course. But the likes of Bowen, Birley and #Marqusee all suffered at the hands of the game’s establishment. 2/14
Given Birley recognised “cricket lovers do not like to be told new things”, #cricket in England is still defined by 'gentlemanly amateurism'.
But rather than a handful of gentlemen associated with the #MCC, the game’s growth owes everything to the efforts of ordinary people. 3/14
