The first Indian commentator I loved and respected was the one and only SMG. Not so much for his skills as one but for his courage to "stand up" to the big boys aka England and Australia on air.

He made his debut in 1990 and while it was expected for ex players to be neutral
on air, it was essential that someone stand up to the double standards going on in world cricket at that time.

His most famous story, which I think occurred while he was captain, was when he refused to allow batsmen to get drinks in between overs on their own. The argument was
that the English and Australian players were not used to the extreme heat and needed additional water to sustain themselves on the field.

His response was that the Indian players were not used to the extreme English cold and so they should also be allowed a heater in the slips

So ... we're packed! Tomorrow we leave #Pakistan after two extraordinary and eventful years. We will take with us many memories of our time in this amazing country, but here are a few of the particularly special ones… 🇬🇧🇵🇰📦🌏✈️(1/9)
First, the cities. Nowhere does cities like south Asia, and nowhere does south Asian cities like Pakistan. #Lahore has to be our favourite (sorry Karachi) for its beguiling blend of history and culture. Our visits there left us hungry for more! 🇬🇧🇵🇰🕌🎨🎶
Second, the countryside. When we arrived in Pakistan, we had no idea how diverse the landscapes were: green, lush forests, jagged, snow-capped mountains and hot, dusty deserts. My favourite? Three days in Chitral and the Hindu Kush! 🗻🏔️

Rohit Sharma achieved a milestone with five centuries in World Cup 2019, most by any batsman in a single edition and joint most in a series/tournament.

@ImRo45 #RohitSharma #Cricket
With 1490 runs, he finished 2019 as the highest run-scorer in ODIs at an average of 57.31 with 7 hundreds which came against seven different opponents. He became the first player to score hundreds against seven different oppositions in a calendar year in International cricket.
Rohit had 10 centuries in International cricket in 2019 while opening the innings, most by any opener in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Graeme Smith in 2005 and David Warner in 2016 scored 9 tons each as openers in International cricket.

#Thread on @patcummins30, the Test bowler.

Cummins is a prolific wicket-taker in Tests and this chart illustrates his progress since 2017.

Credits: @mainlycricket

In terms of bowling averages, Cummins has continued to be impressive over the last three years.

Cummins isn't just wicket-taking. He has managed to be restrictive while taking wickets making him one of the, if not the best, Test pacer now.

Our previous piece's discussion on rare MoM awards @MCG in losing causes led us to posting about one of the most memorable Test bowling performances ever seen on Australian soil.

@TheRealPCB's legendary @wasimakramlive at MCG in 1990 (~overshadowed by WC win 2yrs later).

Imran elected to field against a batting lineup in excellent form. Since the start of the triumphant 89 Ashes series, 5 of Aus' top 6 played in all 9 Tests, collectively scoring over 4k runs at an avg of 70+.

Wasim started with a barrage of teasing outswingers to Taylor.

Last ball of Wasim's 2nd over pitched just outside off, straightened to take Taylor’s outside edge and Javed dropped a sitter. Several plays and misses and a few body blows (often overstepped when delivering a bouncer) continued till lunch (Australia 0/47 after 27 overs).

Australian right handed batsman Billy Murdoch scored first double century in test cricket, making 211 against England at the Oval, on 12 August 1884.

He is also the First Captain.

Australia got their first double-century in their 16th Test, but for England it came in their 75th Test (that too by a debutant)- a record for most matches before first 200 for a team until Bangladesh took 76 Tests for the same.

Here is a table 👇

Today nutrition. Young cricketers need to be fit and able to play six hours a day, repeatedly. For the girls in the u15 national championships, it's six full days of cricket out of seven. They need energy, bone health, hydration, growth and development. #WomenInSport #Cricket
Poor nutrition plays a part in tiredness, poor concentration and an increased risk of injury. #WomenInSport #Cricket

So yesterday I was at the Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, #Pakistan via the Kartarpur Corridor. This photo thread is about my journey to Kartarpur.

I've got a lot of queries already & I'm working on detailed blog posts.

The nearest town to reach Kartarpur Corridor from #India is Dera Baba Nanak which is 2km from the border. Reached here by bus after a 1:30 hrs journey.

Since it was just 2km, I walked from Dera Baba Nanak to the Border terminal. On the way a couple of BSF check posts. Got the first glimpse of Pakistan flag and this is the terminal building.

If you track cricket scores online, if you have followed matches at work (or when traveling), if you have furiously refreshed your browser for updates, if you have been part of a chatroom or forum and met (and argued with) fellow fans… you must learn about Prof Sankara Rao 1/
Prof Sankara Rao was a brilliant man with several academic achievements. He was also a passionate cricket fan, who laid the groundwork for the monument that is ESPNcricinfo. I interviewed Professor Rao in 2013 and he told me – over piping hot coffee – about how it all began. 2/
Rao grew up in Eluru in AP in the '50s. He ran two miles to his friend’s house to listen to radio broadcasts. In 1972, Rao moved to North Dakota State University in Fargo. He would later joke: "Even if I had run 200 miles from Fargo, I would have not got any cricket scores.” 3/
